Becka Barrows - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

Becka - Editor and Writer

My journey to the publishing industry has been anything but traditional. I started my professional career in the military as a Geo-spatial Intelligence Imagery Analyst, which helped me develop sharp analytical skills and a strong attention to detail. Over time, my academic path shifted from studying Sign Language Interpreting to Biology, but I eventually found my true passion in English Literature. I realized that reading and helping authors improve their work brings me the most fulfillment, so I decided to pursue a degree in English.

Currently, I’m an intern at Alpha Book Publisher, where I’m excited to gain hands-on experience in the publishing world. I’m passionate about genres like psychological thrillers, horror, and romance, and I look forward to deepening my understanding of the entire book publishing process. One of my key goals during this internship is to learn what it takes to guide authors through the process of completing their manuscripts, which will not only help me with my own writing but also make me a stronger editor.

I’m particularly passionate about the romance genre because I believe it has so much potential

for depth. Lately, I’ve noticed that many romance novels rely too heavily on explicit content

without giving the characters the development they deserve. My aim is to help create stories

where the intimacy enhances the narrative rather than dominating it. I want to work with authors to craft engaging characters and plots that resonate with readers on a deeper level.

I’ve had the opportunity to gain some experience in the field, including working with Willow

Springs Magazine as part of the editorial team, where I helped review and select submissions

for publication. I also continue to work with Northwest Boulevard Undergraduate Literary

Magazine, where I assist in evaluating fiction submissions. These experiences have reinforced

my love for working on longer projects, and I’m eager to help authors develop their stories into

fully realized works of fiction.

In the long term, I aspire to become a full-time editor and writer. Whether working as a

developmental editor for a publishing company or freelancing with authors, I want to guide

writers through the process of creating books they can be proud of. I believe my focus on

character development and narrative structure will help bring more nuanced and engaging

stories into the world. One of my proudest achievements so far is having a poem accepted for publication in Northwest Boulevard. It was a thrilling moment, and it solidified my desire to pursue a career in publishing. I’m excited about the future and eager to make my mark in the publishing industry, helping authors bring their stories to life.
