Brandon Baril - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

My initial intention in college was to become an English Teacher. As I learned more about the profession, however, I ended up deciding it wasn't for me. I did continue to love the English part of my degree, though, so I stuck with a Major in English for my Bachelor's degree.

For the last assignment of the last class I took before graduating, I had to do a research assignment, which had us research the publishing of a specific book of our choice as part of the assignment. It was an interesting assignment that I learned a lot from, and on top of that gave me the idea to pursue publishing. Additionally, I think the same desire to enable other people to grow and succeed that initially drove me to become a teacher is a large part of what is driving me to want to pursue a publishing internship as well. My expectations for this internship is to decide whether this is the career path for me or not, and to also take advantage of having the opportunity to do so by getting my own book published.

I'm a particularly big fan of sci-fi and comedy, a lot of my favorite literature is written by Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Ray Bradbury. I hope to contribute to the publishing industry by identifying and enabling writers in those respective genres to get there works published, seen, distributed, and sold.

My long-term goal is to use what I learn from this internship to become proficient in the field, so that I can continually meet the demands and standards that will be asked of me as a publisher. On a bit of a side note, because I love literature, I also look forward to reading literature I may not have otherwise been exposed to.

I have not had any experience being published. I have, however, done quite a bit of writing both for academic needs, and for personal enjoyment. A lot of the stuff I've written for personal pleasure has been short stories, and I think to some extent that's also influenced the type of literature I like to read. A particular favorite of mine is A&P, by John Updike. The book I hope to get published as part of this internship is a collection of fictional vignettes, which are a result of this passion for short-form literature.

The last award I won was in 2017, as a senior in high school. Each department at my high school had an award they gave out each year at our honors ceremony. I initially didn't even want to go to the ceremony- my parents had to coax me into it. And when I was there, I certainly wasn't expecting to win any of the department awards. I was shocked when my name got called for our English award, it took me a moment to even get up to accept it. They explained that the awards the departments gave weren't just for straight A+ students, they were for students who had shown considerable growth in their studies and took the initiative to act on their curiosity. Since then, I've made it a habit to continue to grow, and to stay curious. I think my answers to the previous questions reflect that, to some extent.
