Breanna Henry - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans, and I studied Journalism and English Writing as a double major. I have learned all different types of writing for newscasts, news articles, as well as creative writing like fiction stories and poetry. Upon first going to college, I started off as a Journalism major. After working for a newspaper, I quickly realized that journalistic writing is not my passion. Creative writing is. Ever since I was a child, I've always loved writing poetry and songs, which later turned into fictional stories. So once I realized what I actually love to write, I added a double major in English Writing. It's in that part of my major where I got to do a lot of great things that I love. I took poetry classes, I did internships with literary journals, and I edited other people's creative work. It was incredibly fulfilling. I still kept the Journalism major because I am good at writing non-fiction stories and interviewing, but my real passion is creative writing.

I was looking into different jobs I could get in the publishing industry, and I kept seeing Alpha Book Publisher pop up. I saw the internship pop up about 3 times before I finally decided to sign up. I had no idea of the incredible amount of benefits I would gain until after I applied, and I'm so grateful that I did. I am expecting to learn so much about the publishing industry, and I am expecting my writing and editing skills to grow even stronger as a result of this internship.

I have always loved reading and writing realistic fiction. Works that are fictionalized but still relatable. Those types of writings have always been intriguing to me. I see myself contributing to the realistic fiction genre, especially because a lot of what I write anyway is realistic fiction.

My long-term career goal is to be an author, as well as to be an editor that helps other authors with their books. I envision myself helping authors realize their vision for their various works. I really enjoy editing and helping others improve their work.

A lot of my publishing experience is journalistic. I've had a lot of my writing published in publications such as The Maroon, Picture This Post, and New Orleans Review. I've also had my poetry published in a few places, such as Meraki Literary Journal, Clayjar Review, Solid Food Press, Words of the Lamb, etc. It's always so validating being able to see my work in publications. It lets me know that it's out there for people to read and be impacted/influenced by it

One achievement I can think of is during my internship with New Orleans Review, because I did so well in the internship and wrote a great book review on the book "White Smoke," my professor/Editor-in-Chief chose me to interview the author Jocelyn Nicole Johnson on her book "My Monticello." It was such an incredible experience and my first time ever interviewing someone of that caliber.
