About Brown Fox Books
Brown Fox Books is a publisher of material relating to automobiles and motor sports—the history, the people and the cars.
Brown Fox Books is a part of TMI Communications Inc., as is Truck Marketing Institute. Mark Godfrey is the primary force at Brown Fox Books. Growing up in Santa Barbara in the mid 1960's, reading publications that included Automobile Quarterly, Road & Track, and Car and Driver, Mark became an automotive enthusiast at a young age, with a particular interest in vintage sports cars and historic races.
Ownership of a Corvette and a couple of Alfa Romeos led to the purchase of many books on those marques. Then books on other marques started to crowd the shelves, followed by titles devoted to the people; biographies on engineers, designers, drivers and team managers. Then there was the search for out of print titles.
Why $200 for an Out Of Print Biography? Mark became curious as to why some of these books were still out of print after 30 or more years, even though used copies changed hands for hundreds of dollars. This prompted an investigation into what it would take to bring some popular titles back into print. With a background in printing and book design, Mark felt he could combine a knowledge of these disciplines with his interest in automobiles and motor sports. The first Brown Fox Books titles are the result.
One goal in bringing books back into print was to create a new edition that was superior to the original. For example the page size of these biographies has been increased to 6x9 inches to better accommodate photos. The best quality photos have been sourced. The photo pages are printed on coated signatures and inserted between the text pages in as many locations as feasible, to keep the chronology close to that of the text. The text of the books are newly typeset and the copy is updated and checked for factual accuracy.
What will be next for Brown Fox books? Brown Fox Books is not be limited to new editions of previously published work. There are some great subjects for biographies that have not yet been covered, or done justice. Marque books are being considered and also a couple of titles that would appeal to young adults as well as serious automotive historians!
