Chloe Hall - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

My educational background is actually in graphic design, but that led me to look into publishing because of a fascination with the art on book covers. While I studied graphic design, I was recreationally reading loads of novels, which sparked an interest in writing my own.

I was inspired to pursue an internship with Alpha Book Publisher by wishing to enter into the publishing world, and saw this internship as the perfect opportunity to do so. I expect to get an insider look into the various steps that go into publishing a book that go on behind the scenes.

I am fascinated by the whole process and wish to learn as much as I can. I am mostly drawn to fantasy and the incredible world building found within. I would be interested in the editing process of these novels, and developing strategies for helping the reader understand the intense imagery to be able to plant themselves into the world. My long-term goals are to become either an editor and/or book cover designer. I think both of these jobs are incredibly important because they help the author express their ideas to the reader in the best, and most consumable way possible. Both of these jobs help filter the raw thoughts of the author into a furnished product that the readers can fully understand.

All of my previous experiences have been recreationally and outside of a professional environment, but they helped me understand where my skill sets most lie. I have begun writing a novel in my freetime as a creative outlet and to hone my passions for books. I have also helped edit, as well as design a cover, for a friend who is also in the process of writing her own novel. I have found that while editing her novel, I have an eye for picking out strange turns of phrase, or gaps in information, and expressing this in a way that helps the author understand how readers are interpreting their writing.
