Dominick Campbell - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

Hello,

My name is Dominick Campbell and I am excited to be working with Alpha Publishing during this internship. I’m from Carlisle, Iowa where I grew up and completed most of my education before graduating high school.

From there I went on to earn my associates degree in Liberal Arts from DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College), and my Bachelor’s from Iowa State University in English. Throughout these experiences it taught me a lot about myself and how I knew that I wanted to get a career in writing. Although I suppose I should go into detail about what kind of writing I could see myself working in.

My passion for writing started around the middle of high school when I found myself thinking about characters and creating their own stories that revolved around them. They were mostly flakey ideas that were inspired by some of the media that was popular at the time. But I never moved forward with them because I was just learning about copyright laws and how my stories would be to similar to others already established. But that did not deter my creativity in the slightest, I’ve still found myself thinking about unique characters and how I could incorporate them into my own stories. Yet I couldn’t figure out the direction that I wanted to take my writing.

However, that all changed when I went to college and took some of the creative writing classes offered at each campus. This helped me explore my strengths and things to improve on in my writing while observing and giving feedback on others work. Through this I found myself drawn to different types of genres and wondering how I could take them and work it into my own scripts. But for the most part I believe I’ve found a good footing in the science fiction and horror genres. I also have a few others that I think could work well with my main two, but I’m not sure if they’re sub genres, or their own and how well they would mesh with my main two.

Also, while I was going through all these classes, I also found myself exploring more comic books as well. Mostly because I had seen most of the superhero movies of the 2000’s and become heavily interested in the characters. But when I went to college I found myself going to comic book stores and reading the issues and graphic novels where these heroes originated from. Since then, I have amassed a sizable collection and found myself wanting to get into the comic industry. Whether it be taking my own spin on established characters or creating my own and sharing it with the public in fun and entertaining ways.

Although I understand that the “creative writing” business is a hard one to get into and doesn’t happen overnight either. So, until I write and self-publish more of my own creative work, I’d like to look at something writing based that I could build a financially stable career on. Whether it would be something such as a technical writer, freelance writer, or some other variant I haven’t considered yet. I’m not sure if Alpha Publishing has any knowledge of these fields, but I would be willing to learn and discuss it if that becomes an option. Otherwise, I appreciate you inviting me to this internship and helping me shape my writing career for a positive future!

Sincerely,

Dominick Campbell
