Graphic novel book publishing is an exciting new development in the world of comic books. Although it is still very much a niche market, it is quickly growing. Today, there are several companies offering this service. One of these companies is First Second. Several other companies that publish comics include Capstone, Oni Press, Scout Comics and SelfmadeHero.
First Second
First Second is a relatively new company that is based in New York City. It is the brainchild of Bill Siegel, a comics aficionado who was raised in France. Since its inception, First Second has been committed to producing high quality book format comics.
For starters, they have a solid line up of titles. One of the company's best sellers was the George O'Connor authored The Olympians. This graphic novel was a huge success and has sold more than 450,000 copies. Another noteworthy First Second release was Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki's This One Summer.
First Second is not only a graphic novel publisher but is also a publisher of history comics, personal memoirs, and visual essays. They have also branched out into the world of science fiction and fantasy. Their offerings include the InvestiGators, World Citizen Comics, and Adventure Zone graphic novel series. In the last 10 years, First Second has published a hefty 160 books. Among its titles are the first comics to be nominated for a National Book Award, a graphic novel that was a runner up in the book category, and a few other notables.
First Second's mission is to produce high quality comics that will appeal to the general public. A large portion of the company's titles are distributed in the rest of the English-speaking world by Macmillan.
SelfmadeHero
SelfmadeHero is a London-based graphic novel book publishing company. It started out as a manga publisher, but has recently expanded into original fiction. Their list includes some of the best of the genre.
The Graphic Anthology Programme is a 12-week online course aimed at aspiring comic-book artists. It's funded by National Lottery grants through the Arts Council England, and is run in partnership with the charity Spread the Word. Applicants can apply at the SelfMadeHero website. They will be selected for the programme after a review of their submissions, and then embark on the online course.
SelfMadeHero offers a seminar on the art of the graphic novel and the mechanics of getting your work published. Participants will learn how to plan, work to deadlines, and improve every aspect of their creative practice. Several companies are on board to provide support for this enlightening experience.
A new initiative is the creation of the aforementioned Graphic Anthology Programme. This is designed to showcase the best emerging comic-book artists from a variety of backgrounds. Specifically, the programme aims to dismantle the gatekeeping and other barriers that currently limit the UK comics scene.
In addition to the seminar, participants will work on improving their craft through a series of masterclasses. These are taught by leading figures in the industry, including Chris Ware, Adrian Tomine, Seth, and Lynda Barry.
Scout Comics
Scout Comics Graphic Novel Book Publishing has released over 240 comics since its launch in 2015. With a focus on creator-owned, independent works, Scout has a diverse portfolio of comics and comic book series.
In addition to its original and classic comic book titles, Scout has a number of special imprints, including Nonstop!, a monthly comic book aimed at readers. It also releases full graphic novels in print and digital format.
The company also publishes a growing line of trade paperbacks. Several titles have already been published in this genre, including Metalshark Bro, a comic about an anthropomorphic shark.
To expand its reach, Scout is now partnering with LatinX imprint Chispa. This collaboration involves Mucho Mas Media in Los Angeles.
As for its comic books, Scout offers a wide variety of styles and genres. Some of its titles are horror, while others explore a magical supernatural world. There is even a political series for fans of all ages. In addition to the main comics, Scout also has a subscription box for fans. A box of one to two self-contained comics is offered for half a dozen months a year. These mini-comics are sold on newsstand style spinner racks.
Oni Press
Oni Press is a comic book publisher in Portland, Oregon. They've been around for more than two decades. The publisher publishes comics, graphic novels, and webcomics. Their catalog includes titles such as Invader ZIM, Rick and Morty, The Sixth Gun, and Scott Pilgrim.
A few years ago, Oni had a major shakeup. A group of upper management resigned. This summer, the company enlisted an outside firm to find a new president. But the process hasn't gone as smoothly as they had hoped.
Oni's current publisher is James Lucas Jones. He's also president of the consolidated company. While he doesn't say much about specific personnel matters, he did confirm the merger is going to happen.
Oni is one of the leading names in graphic novel book publishing. Some of its titles have spawned cult followings, and some of their original works have won prestigious awards. However, the publisher has had a rough year.
Oni was founded in 1997 by Joe Nozemack and Bob Schreck. Schreck left in 1999 to take a position as a comics editor at DC Comics. Earlier this year, Oni and Lion Forge merged. They are now known as Oni-Lion Forge Publishing Group. Polarity, a pop culture investment company, owns a majority stake in the combined entity.
Amulet Books
Amulet Books is a graphic novel publishing company founded by Kazu Kibuishi. The series follows the adventures of Emily Hayes, who travels with her brother, Navin, to an alternate world known as Alledia.
AMULET BOOKS publishes novels, nonfiction, and graphic novels. It is a subsidiary of Scholastic Graphix. As a publisher, they are aimed at kids aged seven to twelve. They also publish books from a variety of top-notch authors.
This graphic novel series focuses on a girl named Emily who finds an amulet and goes on an adventure. When she arrives in the alternate world, she finds her brother, Navin, and her mother, Karen.
At first, they are not very successful. But after a while, they gain a following. They go on to become popular with both children and adults. In fact, the series has won the Rhode Island Children's Book Award, the Young Readers Choice Award, and was listed as one of Library Journal's best graphic novels for reluctant readers.
Several reviews have praised Amulet for its beautiful illustrations. However, some are concerned that the story is predictable.
Fortunately, Kazu Kibuishi has a flair for character design. For instance, in Amulet: The Stonekeeper, Leon Redbeard is the guide who helps Emily navigate the mystical world. He gives her examples to help her understand the meaning of the words that are being said.
DC Graphic Novel Book Publishing
DC Comics is one of the largest comic book publishers in the world. Originally based in New York City, the company has moved to Burbank, California in 2015. The company's most popular graphic novel, Detective Comics #1000, is celebrating its 80th anniversary.
As the market for graphic novels continues to grow, a number of publishers are expanding their horizons. Among them are IDW Publishing, First Second, and Papercutz.
These publishers offer a variety of benefits for creators. Papercutz is a smaller graphic novel publisher that pays its creators a royalty on a percentage of the books sold. Royalty rates range from 20% to 40%. It also offers upfront page rates for its creators, compared to traditional royalties.
