Company Profile

Growing up in Western Kansas, I developed an early passion for working with my hands, often experimenting with my father’s tools. My high school shop teacher played a key role in nurturing my interest in woodworking, leading me to explore furniture making.

After postponing college to gain hands-on experience in residential construction, I purchased a home with a large workshop, where I began refining my craft. Realizing the need to improve my design skills, I enrolled at Kansas State University, earning a degree in Interior Architecture in 1988.

Drawn by my love of nature and windsurfing, I moved to Portland, Oregon, where I worked for 12 years in a small architecture and design firm. I contributed to a variety of projects, from homes and libraries to corporate offices and luxury yachts. However, the desire to create with my hands led me to leave office work behind in 2000 to focus solely on designing and building custom furniture.

In 2003, my interest in musical instruments brought me to the Northwest Handmade Musical Instrument Exhibit, where I discovered the exceptional craftsmanship of luthiers Jeffrey Elliott and Cyndy Burton. Inspired by their work, I studied guitar-making under their guidance, and over time, they became both mentors and friends. I dedicate myself to building guitars one at a time, prioritizing aesthetic uniqueness and tonal consistency while using high-quality materials and traditional techniques.

Lutherie is the perfect blend of my passions for music, design, and craftsmanship. My workshop, located in the home I share with my wife, artist and writer Susan Boase, is where I find the most joy. While I don’t plan on having a headstone, Susan jokingly insists it would read: "He was happiest in the workshop."
