Isabela Alvarez - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

Hi there!

My name is Isabela Alvarez and I recently graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in environmental studies and a minor in sustainability. Although this was the field of study I decided on at only eighteen years old, as I neared graduation, I could no longer ignore that pursuing my passion for books and literature was what I truly felt called to do. I’m now an intern at Alpha Book Publishers to get the experience I need to make my dreams a reality.

As an intern, I hope to learn about the start-to-finish publishing process that turns a manuscript into a published book found at bookstores nationwide and establish the skills necessary to succeed in the publishing industry. Additionally, I’d even love to learn how to write a book of my own and turn my ideas into a well-written story. I’m hopeful that my work over the next several weeks will equip me with the insight and talents necessary to make me a valuable future employee at one of the big five publishing houses one day!

I love all kinds of books, but the genres I find myself going back to time and time again when deciding what to read next are thrillers, romance, and fantasy. I’d love to work with the authors of thriller books to ensure their plotlines aren’t too elaborate to the point where readers are unable to follow them but are still strong enough for the plot twists to be truly mindblowing. I’d also love to work with the authors of romance books to ensure their main characters are easily-lovable but still relatable, as well as with fantasy authors to create a world so magical that it’s all too easy to be sucked out of the real one the second you dive into the story.

I am a published writer myself as well; in June of 2023, I had an article published in The Planet Magazine about Tokitae, the oldest captive orca whale, and her plans to be rehabilitated and released into her native waters. Unfortunately, Tokitae ended up passing away before she was able to be released, but telling her story was an honor I will hold near and dear to my heart for years to come. If you’d like, you can read my article here: https://www.theplanetmagazine.net/spring-23-the-gray-area/returning-tokitae-home

I’m so excited to be part of the Alpha Publishing team and get started in the industry!
