Kaylah Sheppard - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

I graduated in 2019 from high school and from there I’ve always stuck with writing in some form as a career goal. I started community college that year as a fine arts student, but ultimately decided to major in general studies to explore my options. By Fall of 2021, I earned my associates degree and transferred to Bay Path University as a Forensic Psychology major but my love of writing led me to change my major to Professional Writing with a minor in Psychology. I realized that even when I pursued different subjects like psychology my love for writing always seemed to weasel its way into anything and everything that I was doing.

Writing an essay was never a simple task to me, it was sharing my knowledge with others and in a way gaining community.

I connected with Alpha Book Publisher through my college's internship coordinator but I’ve always had an interest in books and writing. Since I've been at Bay Path, I've worked in the library and enjoy being surrounded by books. I’m looking forward to gaining a better understanding of how those books came to be especially in regards to the editing process. Content and line editing interest me the most but I love being well-informed so I’m excited to learn every form of

editing this internship offers.

In terms of specific genres, I love fiction in general, but I do tend to lean toward escapist fiction. Since I don’t know much about the publishing industry to start, I would like to have a better idea of how I can contribute to the industry by the end of my internship.

My long term goals in the publishing field are to both publish my own stories and help others share their stories as well. I would like to encourage more people to take a chance like I am with this internship

I've been writing poetry, short stories, and song lyrics for years, but Bay Path gave me the opportunity to be published. As a columnist and now associate editor for

Bay Path University’s online magazine publication, Network News, I’ve been able to use my writing to reach audiences that weren’t previously addressed on campus. This furthered my passion for writing and giving voices to minority

students like myself.

In 2022, I earned Bay Path University’s Ignite Award for exemplifying the school's core values through my work in Network News.
