There are a number of LGBTQ+ book publishing companies out there, but they're not all the same. While there are plenty of well-known and popular names, such as Gay Fiction and Writers Out Loud, there are also a number of smaller, less established presses that are doing some great things in this niche.
Persephone Books
Persephone Books is an iconic book brand that has been around for many moons. They sell books both online and in their brick and mortar store in Bath. Their catalogue includes non-fiction, fiction and cookery books. The company also provides a service called Year in Books which sends a tailored read to your door each month. If you are a fan of books or simply want to be surrounded by like minded bibliophiles, consider a membership. You will also have access to free coffee and discounts on the latest releases.
They also have a nifty little app called the Book Club which allows you to set up a profile, get book recommendations and browse reviews. You can also sign up to receive a monthly newsletter, which features tailored recommendations and free e-books. Some of their books are reprints of works by women writers. So if you have been looking for the best book of the year, you are sure to find it on the shelves of Persephone Books.
Aside from the aforementioned book club, the company has a robust blog and a growing catalogue. One of their latest projects is the Persephone Project, a quest for 100 books based on the persephone of Greek mythology. The perks of participating include a persephone T-shirt and free coffee. For the true bibliophile, they even offer a subscription called Year in Books which sends you a personalized read each month. Whether you are looking for your next big read or want to discover something new, there is no better place to start than with the Persephone Books catalogue. After you have checked out their catalogue, head to their website for information on book fairs, events and other events.
Genderqueer Books
Genderqueer Books is a publishing house that publishes gay and lesbian books. They are open for submissions, but you have to submit your manuscript by email and include a bio and contact information.
In a world that often ignores queer identity, LGBT literature gives readers a glimpse into a world beyond conventional ideas of sexuality. Whether it's a graphic novel, or an adolescent saga, these books offer a chance for readers to learn about a variety of sexual experiences.
One of the first queer books to gain national attention is "Gender Queer." It's a graphic memoir about the author's journey to a nonbinary identity, and includes illustrations of sexual content.
The book was listed on the YALSA Best Graphic Novels for Teens list. It also won the Stonewall Book Award-Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Honor Award.
Kobabe's book is also a nominee for the Ignatz Award. And it's been nominated for an ALA Alex Award.
Gender Queer is an intensely cathartic autobiography, which follows the author's exploration of her gender identity. The author's pronouns are e/em/eir, and the book contains illustrations of sexual content.
There have been a number of cases in which schools have tried to ban "Gender Queer" from the classroom. Some school districts have been successful in their attempts. However, some others have been challenged. A lawsuit was filed in Virginia in a bid to keep the book out of the hands of minors. Fortunately, the lawsuit was dismissed.
While the movement against "Gender Queer" is important, the fact that it was released before the rise of social media may have made it more easily targeted. That said, there's no question that it has become a popular book with many students.
Rainbow Books
The New York Rainbow Book Fair is one of the largest LGBT book fairs in the United States. It brings together people who write, publish, and sell books as well as those who enjoy reading them. In addition to books for adults and kids, the fair features an array of sex and LGBTQ+ themed books for all ages. This year's fair will take place on April 22 from 12-6pm at the New York Public Library's Javits Center in Manhattan. If you're not able to attend, you can still get a sneak peek at some of the books at the fair.
The New York Rainbow Book Fair takes place during a month of nationwide celebration of LGBTQIA+ literature, writings, and authors. The annual fair offers discounts on books, prizes, and giveaways to the public.
Michael Genhart's book about a rainbow family explains how one can be proud of being different. He introduces the six-color rainbow flag as a symbol of LGBTQ pride. Several pages feature colorful illustrations of the rainbow.
There is a lot of buzz surrounding the new Rainbow: A First Book of Pride. The book is written specifically for the younger set, and it explains the meaning of the colors on the rainbow.
The title is also a nod to a popular phrase. Be Gay, Do Crime is an anthology of queer comics with heartwarming and informative stories and comics.
The "Stonewall" riots were a major event in LGBTQ+ history in the United States. This book includes photographs, essays, and poems from those involved.
Michael Genhart has also written books about friendship, bullying, and learning differences. His most recent book about a rainbow family is a nod to the many ways that one can be proud of being different.
Xenophon Press
If you're writing a novel, there are several LGBTQ+ book publishing opportunities out there. From small independent publishers to large literary houses, these LGBTQ+ book publishing opportunities can help you reach new readers.
Blind Eye Books is a queer book publishing imprint, based in Bellingham, Washington. They publish short stories, poetry and LGBTQ fiction. However, they do not accept submissions of erotica or horror. You can submit your manuscript to them via email.
Interlude Press is an award-winning publisher of queer romantic fiction. The press seeks to publish well-written, original novels and novellas. They note that it can take up to three months for an editor to review your manuscript. It is important to include an approximate word count, a short synopsis of the novel, a brief history of the publication and a brief description of the genre.
Ylva Publishing is an independent publishing house that publishes books focusing on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters. They are looking for new authors and they do not require an author to pay for their own printing costs. Ylva is open to both self-published and previously published works.
Lethe Press is a small gay publishing company that specializes in both LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ fiction. Previously a sub-imprint of the Haworth Press, Lethe now publishes science-fiction, fantasy, horror, transgender/gender-fluid, mystery/intrigue and gay romance.
Supposed Crimes publishes fiction in print and ebook formats. They are interested in romance, mysteries, and erotica. They have been published in both mystery and detective, and they offer competitive royalty rates.
Deep Hearts YA publishes LBGTQ+ young adult fiction. Submissions must include a theme of self-empowerment. Currently, they are accepting manuscripts that have a minimum word count of 55,000.
Writers Out Loud
The LGBTQ+ book publishing industry has exploded over the past several years. This is thanks to writers who are bold and daring enough to push the boundaries of the genre.
These writers are writing novels and poems that not only show their talents but also help their readers learn about the community. Reading these books also helps students gain a sense of self-worth and a better understanding of the community.
Today's LGBTQ+ literature includes pop culture, subcultures, and subtle hints at the history of the community. They also provide meaningful messages of encouragement and acceptance.
In the early days of the field, it was difficult for writers to find their voice. For instance, many of the early texts were set in locations that separated the reader from the story.
The "good" LGBTQ+ novel treats sexuality as one element of life. It is important to remember that a character's sexuality should not be the focal point of the story. Instead, the writer should focus on the human experience and the nuances of the characters.
Earlier LGBTQ+ texts include references to "sisterhood," "camaraderie," and "womanly." Some of these themes are still present in contemporary texts, as well.
The OUT LOUD program is an incredible way for writers to give back to the LGBTQ+ community. Out Loud gives voice to LGBTQ+ writers, a group often ignored.
As a result, writers are getting more ambitious. Many of these artists have been speaking out publicly for decades. Read their work, and you will be awed.
Writers Out Loud is an incredible collection of voices. It is a celebration of love and life. Each author shares a small piece of their soul with the world.
