About the Country
Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa, bordered by Algeria, Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali. The capital and largest city is Niamey. The official language is French and the currency is the West African CFA franc. The population is approximately 24 million people. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a largely rural and agrarian economy. The country is rich in mineral resources, including uranium, oil, and gold, but it has struggled to develop its mining sector due to a lack of infrastructure and investment. Agriculture is the main source of income for the majority of the population, but it is also vulnerable to droughts and desertification. Niger has a diverse ethnic and cultural makeup and is home to a number of traditional societies and ancient empires such as the Kanem-Bornu Empire and the Sokoto Caliphate. The country has been facing multiple challenges including poverty, food insecurity and a lack of basic services and infrastructure.
