A Little Bit About Me

Hi, I’m Mia.

My first love is a good book. I’m a dog-ear folder, a marginalia advocate, a drifter of imaginary worlds. Stories and their all-encompassing wisdom is one of the things that inspired me to major in English studies. Additionally, I’m juggling a double major in Political Science and minor in Information Systems. I hope to incorporate writing and reading in my life for the considerable future, especially in its application in book-researching or the paralegal professional field. I’ve even given thought to the prospect of becoming a novelist later down the line, though I do have my own reservations about publishing something that may mean so much to me (oh, the terrifying ordeal of being known). In it, I aspire to include bilingual dialogue, as I speak Mandarin and English in my everyday life. I want to honor the knowledge and scholars that my predecessors did not get to be, and use the language I have been afforded to give a voice to those that do not know what to say.

A little more about me:

As a student, my experience of personal and professional writing is expanding by the day. Sometimes the intersection of writing is so expansive that it can be intimidating. However, I am only that much more intrigued to venture into what the publishing domain looks like. In this summer internship with Alpha Publishers, I hope to showcase the skills I have learned and loved in my studies to navigate the in-between spaces of graded papers and the pages of my journals.

My biggest strength and my biggest weakness align: I am so new that I am a blank canvas to the wonderful influence of writers who came before me, yet I fear the embarrassment of being a novice. This is my first step out of my comfort zone. I hope to use this opportunity with Alpha Publishers as a guiding star into future adventures.

That came off a little strong, sorry. I mean, cannibalism as a metaphor for love. Or more accurately, the strange, wonderful world of writing and imagery in the context of art, film, politics, and history. I see it in Goya’s “Saturn Devouring His Son,” in Carol Ann Duffy’s collection of poems in Rapture, and in the historical version Little Red Riding Hood ("Conte de mere-grand”). I think of the intersection of language and craftsmanship, of art, stories, and academia, and how to present this information to an audience. How do I write in a compelling manner to get something as strange as cannibalism across?

My interests, while definitely taboo, encompasses the themes and overlaps I want to highlight as someone breaking into the publishing world and as someone that loves to research everything. Nothing is ever unrelated.

There are so many untold stories, so many lifetimes I have lived through others, that I hope to add my own into the vast library of life. This is only the first of my chapters. I have far to go: academically, mentally, and growing into my capabilities. My ambition is to add to the human experience of story-telling. Here, in this bio of Frankenstein evidence, I hope to prove some worth as a writer, reader, student, and fellow drifter.

This will be my first dive into the publishing industry! I am excited at the flexibility and versatility of this program.

I was fortunate enough to be recommended by an admired professor to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s English Honors Program. Going to tackle my undergraduate thesis will be an adventure and a half.
