Mikayla Ramos - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

My Bio

Hi,

I am currently attending my last year at San Francisco State University. My studies are focused in Psychology and Comparative World Literature. The classes and the cinema extracurriculars provided at the university have helped guide me to publishing. I’ve always been a writer, but I’ve always found more pleasure in reading than I do writing. Through a few creative writing classes, poetry slams, and time spent on film sets as a script supervisor I realized that my passion for literature flourishes in writing. Whether it be film scripts, manuscripts, or poetry I have found love in reading and helping the writers reach their potential.

I pursued an internship with Alpha Book Publisher because I believe that I could learn the most from them. Writing a book is one thing, but to take one’s own work through the entire process of publishing until it’s in your hands exceeds any other opportunity. I expect this experience to teach me all it can and help be my stepping stone into the publishing and editing industry.

Psychological fiction is one of my favorite genres to read about. There is something in the domesticity it holds, the profoundness in simplicity that I find alluring. I hope with my educational background I am able to contribute both my knowledge and writing skills to the publishing industry. A guilty-pleasure genre of mine is romance, so I hope to bring my experience of film into play when discussing the natural flow of something as intimate as romance.

My long-term goal is to have a career in the editing department of the publishing field. I want to help author’s work be known, and if I can do that by helping them find a flow within their stories or simply correcting any grammatical mistakes I will happily do so. I envision myself reading over manuscripts and helping authors reach their highest potential. I want to help readers find a book so encaptivating that they can’t put it down and yearn for more.

I haven’t had my work published, but I’ve written plenty and performed poetry at any slam event I can find within the city. The response to my writing has encouraged me to invest in a career regarding literature, but my skills and my interest are driving me to publishing. The process of workshopping not only my writing but my fellow writers and my peers is a more than enjoyable process. I believe that I can best contribute to literature through publishing and editing, however, if I were to become a writer as well that’d be better than a dream. At this time I have no notable achievements, awards, or recognition for my writing or publishing.
