Before joining One World, she invested in the arts, journalism and freedom of speech in roles at the Ford Foundation and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. She co-founded several philanthropic initiatives, including Critical Minded, which supports cultural critics of color. A former critic and journalist, she started her career at Vibe Magazine; in his book Decoded, Jay-Z cited one of her essays as an inspiration for his song “Public Service Announcement.” And her Spanish-language oped on street harassment helped spark the country’s first ever city council hearing on street harassment. She is on the boards of A Long Walk Home and Critical Minded.
Kierna Mayo, VP & Executive Editor, She/Her
Kierna Mayo is Vice President and Executive Editor of One World and Roc Lit 101. Her three-decade long career in print and digital media began with covering hip hop culture. Kierna is the co-founder of Honey magazine and the former editor in chief of Ebony magazine. Her own writing has appeared in Essence, Marie Claire, The New York Times, Vibe, The Smithsonian and other outlets. She is a Folio 100 and Root 100 honoree, and her editorial work has also earned distinguished honors from GLAAD and the NAACP. Kierna is founding member of The Kennedy Center Hip Hop Culture Council. She thinks of herself as both cultural critic and culture creator; that’s why she named her dope podcast Culturati.

Prior to working in marketing and publicity, she was a speaking agent at the Penguin Random House Speakers Bureau, a literary events producer at Symphony Space, and also interned at Akashic Books.
Sun Robinson-Smith, Editorial Assistant, She/Her
Sun Robinson-Smith is an Editorial Assistant at One World. Sun began her publishing career at Workman, where she worked on bestselling calendars and nonfiction titles about traveling, parenting, and self-improvement. A graduate of Colgate University and the Columbia Publishing Course at Oxford, Sun is an avid traveler and reigning trivia champion, so she believes there is no such thing as too much information in life or in books. She loves data, deep dives, and distinctive voices. Her aim in life is to be scary but kind like her grandmother. Sun is a mentor with Representation Matters and lives in Brooklyn.
Oma Beharry, Editorial Assistant, They/Them Oma is a former intern of One World’s and an inaugural graduate of the Bard Microcollege at Brooklyn Public Library. Following a lifelong love of literature (shoutout to their teachers in Bronx public schools!) and an unlikely series of events, they jumped at the opportunity to enter publishing. Previously, they worked in fields ranging from food service to mentoring NYC teen girls. Their hobbies include adding to their ever-growing to-read list, trying to break their personal record at mini-crosswords, and folding paper cranes out of overlooked scrap. A compulsive notetaker, they are never anywhere without paper and pen. They are proud to be from the Bronx, and still reside there today.
