Rachel Leach - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

In fall of 2024 I will be attending The University of Washington Tacoma to complete my Bachelors Degree in Creative Writing. Before I applied to Udub Tacoma I studied abroad in England at The University of Roehampton located in South West London. Living in a city that some people call the epicenter of English along with having the reputation of a rich multicultural environment broaden my horizons and ambitions.

Between my classes and taking advantage of opportunities for example visiting Virginia Woolf’s house In Richmond, attending productions of The Tempest and Much Ado About You at the famous Globe Theater. And retracing Charles Dickens steps from his work Night Walks. The experience I had in London has inspired me tremendously to pursue in the publishing industry as well as pursuing my lifelong dream to become an author.

What inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and pursue an internship with Alpha Book Publisher was my love and apparition for books and the authors who write them. After reading the description for the internship I was immediately hooked and knew I had to take a chance and apply to this exciting opportunity. What I am looking forward to most is learning how to publish a book, getting hands-on experience, and obtaining skills for a career in publishing.

Some specific genres and topics I am passionate about are contemporary fiction, modern fiction, short stories and creative non-fiction. I would love to be able to contribute to any of these topics or genres while interning. Authors for example like Sally Rooney, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Fredrik Backman all write beautiful yet at times devastating stories about humanity and our flaws, mistakes, and lessons we learn and can relate to from the characters in their books. I am passionate about getting my hands on stories like theirs during my time spent at Alpha Book Publisher and to help young authors get their voice out there in the world.

My long term career goals in the publishing world is to hopefully work closely with authors and to collaborate with them throughout the book production process. I see myself contributing to the publishing industry by editing manuscripts and discovering untapped talent. As well as working as a team to market and promote any new book releases or promotions.

At the University of Roehampton I joined the Writing and Poetry Club; it was one of the great resources that the University offered. Before joining the club I wasn't usually drawn to writing or reading poetry but after learning and talking to my peers I started dabbling in writing my own poetry. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. My time spent in the club was filled with lots of learning and growing for not just my writing but also for myself.

Although I have never received awards or recognition in terms of my writing or publishing endeavors. I have flirted with the idea of submitting some of my work to one of the writers' digest competitions. But I always chicken out. I have decided to start a blog on Substack that I try to write on as much as possible.
