Sarah Leto - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

I earned my associates degree in math at community college before earning a bachelors in computer science at a university. I pursued that education because I love math, data, and analytics! Besides math, writing is another one of my passions. In school and in my professional career I always enjoyed combining those two passions. I got the opportunity to do technical writing in the software industry which ended up being more creative than I originally would have thought. It made me more driven to pursue writing in my personal time.

I have been writing as a hobby for years. Recently I have done volunteer work as a narrative designer for a mobile game. After exploring hobbyist writing, technical writing, and narrative design, I thought I would like to know the whole process better. I wanted to understand the publishing side. The internship with Alpha Book Publisher seemed like the perfect opportunity to incorporate publishing into my set of skills.

I find that I am drawn to stories with extensive character development, even when I try to branch off to other genres. As I am drawn to them, I would love to work with those stories. Maybe I will contribute to the publishing industry by helping to bring more character driven stories to the public. Truthfully though, since I have very little knowledge about publishing, I want to be open to new genres and topics.

Long term, I would enjoy working in publishing. I don't yet know what work exists within publishing, so it is difficult to say where I would like to land. I would like to work on creative stories with interesting people. If I did make an impact on the industry, it would probably be through my honest and direct voice as well as my genuine interest in understanding others' perspectives.

In middle school, I had a poem published in the yearly school publication. No, but seriously... I have been writing as a hobby since I was a teenager. Since then, I have done technical writing professionally. I am currently working on narrative design for a mobile game. I have also recently connected with a couple of writers who live in my area, and I have worked on their manuscripts with them. The deeper I get into writing/publishing, the more I am sure that I want to continue with it.

I have no accolades I can share unfortunately. I wrote a manual for a software tool which was very well received, but I can't share any details about it because it's owned by the software company.

Sincerely,

Sarah Leto
