Company Profile

In 1983–84, Dan Simon discovered Nelson Algren’s short story A Bottle of Milk for Mother in an old anthology edited by Robert Penn Warren. He bought the book from a street vendor for a dollar and was immediately captivated by Algren’s writing. As he sought out more of Algren’s work, Simon was surprised to find that all of his books had gone out of print. Determined to bring them back to readers, he started exploring ways to republish them.

Simon’s friend and colleague, Glenn Thompson, who was the founder of Writers and Readers Publishing, encouraged him to pursue the rights to Algren’s books. Thompson even offered Simon his own imprint and promised to cover the printing costs. This support gave Simon the opportunity to move forward with his mission to reintroduce Algren’s work to a new generation of readers.

The first books republished under Simon’s imprint were The Neon Wilderness and Never Come Morning. These were released under the name “Dan Simon/Four Walls Eight Windows” within Writers and Readers Publishing. At that time, Writers and Readers was distributed in the United States by W.W. Norton, a company where Simon was working as an assistant editor after completing graduate school. It was during his time there that he connected with Thompson, which led to the opportunity to publish Algren’s work.

The republished Algren books performed well in the market, receiving both strong sales and critical attention. Simon’s initiative successfully revived interest in Algren’s writing, proving that there was still an audience eager for his work. This experience marked the beginning of what would later become Seven Stories Press, a publishing house committed to keeping important literary voices in circulation.
