Susana Rocha - Intern

Devon Burton Intern at Alpha Book Publisher

A Little Bit About Me

I graduated from Allen Highschool in 2016. I also graduated from Collin Community Spring Creek in 2020 with an associate degree in general studies & 8-12 Education. I’m currently studying at University of Texas at Dallas with a major in Literature with a concentration of rhetoric’s & communications. It has shaped my interest in writing & publishing because it has given more experience with my writing, explore more tropes, organizing/editing manuscripts, and to give an inside perspective into the publishing industry.

As I said before, I’m currently studying at UTD with a Literature major degree. I have finished my Junior this spring semester and will be needing to get an internship to get more experience in my field. When I heard that Alpha Book Publishing was accepting internships for the summer, I applied straightway. My expectation for this internship was to as gain as much experience into the publishing business as I can. Also, I was intrigued with the idea of publishing my own book and it give me an inside scoop into what goes on with writing, editing, and publishing a book.

There are multiple genres that I’m passionate about. As an avid reader myself, I can enjoy a plethora of genres ranging from: Historical fiction, Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Psychological, YA Fantasy, Fantasy, Horror, and Romance. I see myself contributing to the company by giving an insight view on what readers want to include into their reading experience and to give advice to tropes that could be expanded upon.

My long-term goal for my career is complete my journey as an intern with Alpha Books Publishing. Once I reached my final semester at UTD, I can hope to qualify for another internship at a different publishing company. Once I graduate, I will be able to apply for any publishing companies in Texas to become an editor or an aspiring author. I can make an impact throughout the industry by giving helpful insights into what readers want in a novel and give a creative spin to tropes that readers have seen in various novels. For example, a chosen one story where the hero must decide into taking on a quest or journey or our main character falling in love with the main villain with the surrounding characters having to judge or be concern with the relationship.

I have written some stories such as The Highlanders where a scholar, a princess, a thief, and a healer must travel an ancient civilization which was lost through myths and legend by an unknown figure but have not been able to finish due to lost interest and creative block. While I have not been able to have any writing or publishing experience, it has influenced my passion and aspirations to write and edit a book because I love the experience of thinking of creative ideas and morphing them into what I and other readers want to write into a compelling story.

I have published a Wikipedia article about Earl Leland Smith, an air pilot who flown for various aviation companies and Jean Rotz, a mapmaker for King Henry VIII whose works came to be attracted by French royalty. I have received a certificate for advanced writing & research from spring semester this year.
