Politics and Prose is an independent bookstore located in Washington, D.C. that has been serving the community since 1984. The bookstore was founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade, two friends who were passionate about books and wanted to create a bookstore that would be a community gathering place. They opened the store in a small storefront on Connecticut Avenue in the heart of Washington, D.C.
In its early days, Politics and Prose quickly became known for its wide selection of books, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and its commitment to the community. The store hosted a variety of events, such as book signings, author readings, and panel discussions, which were open to the public and attracted both local and national authors.
As the store grew in popularity, it expanded to a larger location on Connecticut Avenue and also added a café, which serves coffee, tea, sandwiches and pastries. The store also began to operate a popular bookstore-on-wheels, the P&P Bookmobile, which travels around the Washington, D.C. area to bring books to communities that do not have access to a bookstore.
In addition to its wide selection of books and its commitment to the community, Politics and Prose is also known for its progressive politics. The bookstore frequently hosts events and discussions on political and social issues and also actively participates in political campaigns and advocacy efforts.
In 2011, after 27 years of ownership, Carla Cohen passed away and Barbara Meade sold the bookstore to two of their long-time employees, Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine. Under their leadership, the bookstore has continued its tradition of excellent customer service, a commitment to the community and a wide variety of events and discussions.
In conclusion, Politics and Prose is an independent bookstore located in Washington, D.C. that has been serving the community since 1984. Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade, it quickly became known for its wide selection of books, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and its commitment to the community. The store has evolved over time to also become known for its progressive politics and its active participation in campaigns and advocacy efforts, as well as its popular bookstore-on-wheels, the P&P Bookmobile.
