The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is a Smithsonian institution located in Washington, D.C. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. The museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, after a century of efforts to establish a museum dedicated to African American history.
The idea for a national museum dedicated to African American history and culture first emerged in 1915, with the formation of the National Negro Congress. However, it wasn't until 2003, that the Museum Act was signed into law, providing the Smithsonian with $17 million in seed money to plan the museum. Construction of the museum began in 2012 and it opened in 2016, on the National Mall, next to the Washington Monument.
The NMAAHC has a vast collection of artifacts, art, and documents that tell the story of the African American experience, from the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to the present day. Some of the most notable objects in the museum's collection include a shawl worn by Harriet Tubman, a suit worn by Michael Jackson, and a Bible owned by Nat Turner.
The museum's exhibitions are designed to provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the African American experience and its impact on American history and culture. The museum's exhibitions are organized thematically, covering topics such as the history of slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the contributions of African Americans to American culture, science, and the military.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture continues to be a vital institution, providing a space for the recognition, preservation and celebration of the contributions of African Americans to American history and culture.
