The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is a museum located in Washington, D.C. that is dedicated to the preservation, study, and exhibition of the culture and history of indigenous peoples of the Americas.
The museum was established in 1989, with the passage of the National Museum of the American Indian Act. The legislation was sponsored by U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. The law established the NMAI as part of the Smithsonian Institution and charged it with the mission of "advancing knowledge and understanding of the Native cultures of the Western Hemisphere."
The museum's collection includes over 800,000 objects, including artifacts, art, and historical documents. The collection reflects the diversity of indigenous cultures from throughout the Americas and includes items from prehistoric times to the present day.
The NMAI opened its doors to the public in September 2004. The museum is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the Smithsonian Castle and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The museum's design was influenced by the traditional architecture of indigenous peoples of the Americas and is intended to reflect the natural landscape of the surrounding area.
The NMAI is also the first national museum to be owned and operated by a Native American tribe, the Chickasaw Nation. They were given control of the museum in 2018.
The NMAI continues to be a vital institution for the preservation, study and exhibition of the cultures and history of indigenous peoples of the Americas, and works to promote an understanding and appreciation of the contributions that Native Americans have made to the world.
