Fasting, or Sawm in Arabic, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is considered to be a form of worship that allows Muslims to purify their souls and come closer to God. The fast is observed during the month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from sunrise until sunset. This includes abstaining from all forms of consumption, including smoking and intimate relations.
The fast is not just about abstaining from physical needs but also about practicing self-control, self-discipline, and self-reflection. Muslims are encouraged to use this time to focus on their spiritual growth and to improve their relationship with God.
The fast is broken at sunset with a meal known as iftar. This meal usually consists of dates, water, and a light meal. Muslims are also encouraged to perform additional prayers and recite the Quran during this time.
Fasting is not just for adult Muslims, but also for those who have reached puberty, and those who are physically and mentally able to fast. Exemptions are made for those who are elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, traveling, or ill.
The fast is also not just about abstaining from food, but also about abstaining from negative behaviors, such as lying, cheating, and gossiping. Muslims are encouraged to use this time to improve their character and to become better people.
After the month of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, a joyous occasion that marks the end of the fast and the beginning of a new month.
It's important to note that there is no such thing as a beginner's guide to Islam, as fasting is a spiritual act of worship that requires the guidance of an expert teacher, and the willingness of the person to learn and practice, and the understanding of the fast's meaning and its significance.
