The National Environmental Policy Act

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is a federal law in the United States that requires federal agencies to consider the environmental impact of their actions before making decisions. The Act was passed in 1970 and is administered by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).

NEPA requires federal agencies to conduct an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for any proposed action that may have a significant impact on the environment. The EIS must include an analysis of the environmental impact, as well as any potential alternatives to the proposed action and the impact of those alternatives. Federal agencies are also required to consult with the public, state and local governments, and other interested parties during the EIS process.

In addition to EIS, NEPA also requires federal agencies to conduct an Environmental Assessment (EA) for actions that may have a less significant impact on the environment. If the EA indicates that the proposed action will not have a significant impact on the environment, the agency may proceed with the action without conducting an EIS.
