Top Book Publishers in Beijing

Unlike the book markets in the West, which are flat or declining, Chinese publishing is booming. As Chinese living standards improve, lifestyle books - covering fashion, entertainment, games, self-help, sports, health, hobbies, collecting and more - are quickly gaining popularity in the market.

China also has a fast growing e-book industry. Among the leading publishers in this field are Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House, Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers and Liaoning Science and Technology Press.

Tsinghua University Press

Tsinghua University Press (TUP) is a first-class national publisher with an excellent reputation for publishing high-quality publications. Its main business is academic and higher education publishing, with a strong focus on scientific journals. TUP publishes around 2,500 new titles in print and digital format every year and dozens of Chinese and English journals.

It has a staff of over 100 people, including more than 300 authors. In addition to publishing academic books and journals, TUP also offers a number of services for its authors, such as copyright protection and proofreading.

The Tsinghua University Press is home to a wide range of academic journals, all of which are peer-reviewed and have been published in both Chinese and English. The publications span a variety of topics, including arts and literature, culture, history, philosophy, law and medicine.

In addition to being a major publisher in China, Tsinghua University Press has long been active on an international level, collaborating with hundreds of leading publishers around the world. In recent years, Tsinghua has worked with several prominent American universities, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California-Berkeley.

According to TUP’s website, its publications reflect the research achievements of Tsinghua University that are distinctive and edge-cutting. The publications have gained a reputation for being high-quality and important in their field.

Tsinghua University Press has also been one of the first Chinese publishing companies to develop an international cooperation department. This department was established in the 1990s, and it works to provide a platform for the press to reach out to the world.

Beijing Normal University Press

Beijing Normal University Press is one of China's largest and oldest book publishers. It is also known as the "Global History Press" and has published a series of books in global history including research on the theory of modern social development, Marxism philosophy and theory of globalization.

It has won the Wu Yuzhang Excellence Award for Humanities and Social Sciences and many other awards. It has also been selected to participate in "Project 985", which aims at strengthening a few elite universities.

In addition, BNU has an extensive international program that includes summer sessions at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts and other international programs. This allows students to study abroad for several weeks each year while living on campus.

The press's publications are divided into three categories: research, teaching and service. It has published a number of books in the fields of education, culture and society. It has also been a partner in a number of government-funded research projects.

While some of its publications have a high level of prestige, others are accessible to a wide audience. For instance, it offers textbooks for primary and secondary school children as well as university students, and has also published several dictionaries.

These books are used by teachers and students in China as well as around the world. In addition, the press publishes academic journals and has established an official website.

Overall, the profits of publishing groups and large well-known presses were both reduced in 2006. This decline can be attributed to the bidding system for textbooks for primary and high schools as well as the price-cap regulation. This has led to a polarization of the industry. However, there are some large well-known presses seeking intensive development that have increased their profits. They should be given vigorous support by the government.

Beijing Language and Culture University Press

Beijing Language and Culture University Press, also known as BLCU Press or Bei Jing Yu Yan Da Xue Chu Ban She (BLCUP), is a university publishing house that specializes in Chinese textbooks. It was founded in 1985 and is affiliated to BLCU.

Located in the Haidian District of Beijing, BLCU is a co-educational higher education institution that offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees. Its enrolment ranges from 10,000 to 14,999 students and offers pre-bachelor degrees (certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees and doctorate degrees.

In addition to educating students in China's national languages, the university also provides professional training in various fields including foreign languages, information science, economics and arts. Its students come from a wide range of countries and regions worldwide, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in their respective fields.

BLCUP publishes a number of journals and books on Chinese language teaching and culture. Its publications are highly regarded and have a significant impact at home and abroad.

BLCU has also established cooperative relations with numerous universities and educational institutions around the world. These include Harvard, the University of Manchester in Britain, Webster University and George Mason University in the United States, Konstanz University of Applied Sciences in Germany and many others.

The university has trained over 160,000 foreign students who are proficient in Chinese and familiar with Chinese culture from 176 countries and regions in the world. These students have been instrumental in the advancement of China's international reputation.

BLCU is currently comprised of 3 divisions, 6 Schools and two research centers. The university has been a leader in the field of training Chinese language teachers and educating foreign students in China. It has a strong and extensive faculty, whose alumni have made a lasting impact on society.

Writers Publishing House

A large-scale publishing house attached to the Chinese Publication Bureau, Writers Publishing House (Zuo Jia Chu Ban She ) is a major player in the Chinese literary scene. It publishes contemporary literature and has a number of bestselling novels in its catalog.

The company is a member of the China National Publishers Import & Export (Group) Corporation. The group was formed in March 2002 as a merger of several leading publishers and distribution companies.

While most of the top book publishers in China are government-owned, a handful of private firms have emerged with strong editorial acumen and market savvy. These include the Shanghai Century Publishing Group and Horizon Media Co., Ltd.

Another important player in the Chinese book market is China South Publishing & Media Group, headquartered in the Hunan Province. It publishes a wide range of books in both English and Chinese, including trade journals and business books.

There are more than 500 book publishers in the Chinese mainland today, with most of them based in Beijing. The city is home to nearly 40 percent of the country’s publishing companies.

Professional publishing covers natural sciences and parts of the social sciences, as well as ancient Chinese classics. These categories account for 8% of the total Chinese book market, according to an estimate by the Beijing OpenBook Market Consulting Center.

Many of the most important Chinese science and technology books publishers are located in the Beijing area. The main players in this field are Jiangsu Science and Technology Publishing House, Liaoning Science and Technology Press, Shandong Science and Technology Press, Zhejiang Science and Technology Press, and Hunan Scientific and Technological Literature Publishing House.

Other book publishers that are based in Beijing include the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, People's Literature Publishing House, Hebei Education Press, Jieli Publishing House, Yangtze River Literature and Art Publishing House, Guangxi Normal University Press, Lijiang Publishing House, Shaanxi Normal University Press, Sichuan Children's Publishing House, and The Commercial Press. These are mainly responsible for producing textbooks and reference material, but they also publish other non-textbook books.

New China Booksellers

New China Booksellers is one of the oldest book publishers in the world. It was founded in Chicago in 1960 by Dr. Henry Halsey Noyes, a Presbyterian missionary who had spent time in China and was committed to distributing books from the People's Republic of China during the Cold War.

Since its founding, the company has grown into a major publishing house with branches in Hong Kong and the United States. It has published numerous books about China, including a Mao Zedong biography, Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, and several titles about the Cultural Revolution.

Another important trend in Chinese book publishing is the growing number of authors who write about China from a humanistic standpoint. These are usually more diverse than the usual red-and-dragons China books.

This trend is especially prevalent on e-commerce giant JD's annual bestseller list, which often features classic Chinese literature and other books highlighting traditional culture. A Dream of Red Mansions, a popular novel introducing a pre-modern China, and landmark world literature like One Hundred Years of Solitude are also top-ranked on the list.

However, the rise of Xinhua and online retailers has made it harder for private booksellers to survive. Despite their declining numbers, private booksellers still account for about 34.5 per cent of China's retail book market.

In addition, bookstores have become a popular destination for China's social media celebrities, known as wanghong. These internet personalities, who often seek followers and clicks, often post photos in attractive locations, such as at a bookstore.
