The book publishing industry has become a highly competitive one. This is because there are many large and small publishing companies who each focus on different genres of literature.
However, there are also some amazing indie publishing companies that are making a name for themselves with a unique approach to the world of publishing. These companies are making a name for themselves with their bold and courageous works of literature.
Oxford University Press
Oxford University Press (OUP) has been in operation for over a century and its publishing expertise is well-established. Its journal Social Science Japan Journal focuses on the interdisciplinary study of modern Japan, from anthropology and history to law, economics and politics. Its substantial book review section includes scholarly articles on Japan and comparisons with other countries.
Whilst OUP may not be able to match the production values of some American publishers, it is a good example of a venerable, prestigious and respected university-owned publisher. It also has a deep connection to its mother university.
This connection to the university and to its alumni may have provided a context that encouraged OUP to consider climate adaptation. Whilst this may not be unique to Fukuoka, the city’s distinctive environmental history is worth considering for its early adoption of climate change and adaptation-related policies within local planning.
The city has made rigorous attempts to consider climate issues within its greenspace and urban planning since the 1990s, including an extensive body of research into urban thermal environments based on a wide range of technical expertise (Mabon et al., 2015; Tan & Jim, 2017). The city’s first climate change plan was published in 1994, placing it ahead of Hiroshima, Kobe and Kyoto by several years.
These plans consider strategies to create cool spots through greening, preserve wind corridors and create a city-wide green network (Fukuoka City, 1999, 2009c; Fukuoka City, 2014; Fukuoka City, 2016a). They are backed up by a wealth of applied research into the physical environment from within the city and from local institutions.
The city also encourages community-level greening through initiatives such as the Green Curtain Project, offering cash prizes for growing vertical greenery and involving citizens and the private sector in small-scale greening actions. Such actions can help to maximise the climate benefit of greening and build social relations, and can help to connect different sections of the city’s urban governance in a way that allows for a more holistic approach to climate adaptation in dense cities.
Shueisha
Founded in 1926, Shueisha is a leading Japanese publishing house that produces general magazines and comics, as well as picture books and literature. It also operates portal sites that feature manga and women’s magazines, and a mail-order service for merchandise.
Its flagship manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump is one of the most popular in Japan and has been licensed to several video game developers. It has also launched its own gaming division, called Shueisha Games, to develop games for consoles and smart devices.
In addition to its manga titles, the company publishes a variety of comics and anime titles. In the past few years, it has been working on a new initiative to bring its digital manga to a wider audience through its official service Manga Plus.
The launch of Manga Plus is a huge step forward for officially-licensed digital manga and will allow more people to read manga without the need for subscription services or lag time. As Anime News Network reports, Manga Plus will offer more than 30 series from across Shueisha’s manga roster, including those not published in Weekly Shonen Jump.
It will also be available on Android and iOS apps, and readers will be able to read and purchase digital versions of prior chapters and even support manga artists by purchasing their works. This official service will help manga creators produce sequels and new works, while at the same time allowing fans to experience their favorite manga series from start to finish.
The company also has a variety of other publications, including comics, novels, and dictionaries. It has also been a major contributor to Japanese culture with its many manga and anime series.
Macmillan
Macmillan, a division of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, is a global trade book publisher with prominent imprints across several countries. The company is known for publishing high-quality literature, dictionaries, and other nonfiction titles as well as children's books, music and video.
Macmillan's history dates back to 1843, when Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Scottish Isle of Arran, founded their business. They quickly became known for their literary acumen, publishing such classics as Charles Kingsley, Thomas Hughes, Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry James, and Thomas Hardy, among others.
More than just a book publisher, Macmillan has expanded to offer a range of educational services and products that serve the needs of students, educators and institutions throughout the world. Its education arm provides world-class content, including English language textbooks, school curriculum and reference materials in multiple languages.
For the discerning reader, the company also offers a number of e-book solutions to complement traditional printed text. One of the most innovative is its mobile app, Macmillan Books in Motion, which allows users to access and download books from their smartphone or tablet.
The company's e-book offerings also include Macmillan Connect, a new e-commerce platform designed to make buying, managing and sharing books easier than ever. The site features an interactive book shelf and a user-friendly interface to allow customers to search for and purchase books.
In addition, the company has a range of e-books for adults. These include such titles as The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2006.
In the United States, the company's largest market, Macmillan publishes a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction titles for readers of all ages. The publisher has imprints in all 50 states, as well as in Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Scholastic
Scholastic is the world's leading publisher of books and media for children. Its products are distributed through a variety of channels, including retail sales, online and catalog purchases, reading clubs, and school-based book fairs. The Company publishes a wide range of titles that support children's varied interests and stages of reading development across 14 distinct imprints.
Founded in 1926, Scholastic has become a trusted partner to teachers and students alike, providing print and technology-based learning programs for pre-K through grade 12 that address the needs of all learners. With expert professional development, family and community engagement, and learning supports for every age and stage, the Company's solutions empower teachers to help students reach their full potential.
The Company's award-winning publishing division offers more than 600 new titles a year to engage and educate young readers in the US, Canada, Australia, and Asia. From classics for toddlers and tweens to bestselling fiction for middle-grade readers, Scholastic's selection of titles entertain and inspire kids across the country and around the world.
Another key business is Scholastic Classroom Magazines, which offers a comprehensive selection of educational titles for pre-K through grade 12. From the U.K.-based Mary Glasgow magazines, which offer foreign-language titles, to the encyclopedia-like Scholastic News(r) and Junior Scholastic(r), students have access to an expansive assortment of topics, ranging from social studies and history to science and math.
Scholastic's growing portfolio of entertainment properties has built beloved children's brands, including Clifford the Big Red Dog(r), the Magic School Bus(r) series, and Goosebumps(r). SEI partners with studios, co-production partners, and broadcasters to develop and produce content that brings Scholastic's books to audiences worldwide.
Kodansha
Kodansha is Japan's largest publishing house. Established in 1909 by Seiji Noma, the company has a long history of producing popular magazines and books on a wide range of topics. Today, the compall is led by Yoshinobu Noma and continues to enjoy a strong presence in Japan's media world.
Kodansha has a vast library of titles that span the genres of literature, fiction, nonfiction, children's, business, art, lifestyle, manga and more. It also publishes several publications in English and Chinese languages.
The company's most recent venture into digital distribution is Kodansha e-books, which will be available on mobile devices and tablets. Kodansha aims to reach more readers through these digital platforms than ever before.
Moreover, the company has launched Kodansha Book Store, an online bookstore that will be available through Google Play and Amazon. It will offer more than 50,000 titles from a variety of genres including literature, comics, children's books, and business.
While many of these books are available in e-books, they will also be released as hardcovers and paperbacks. In addition, Kodansha will also release books in audio and video formats.
In the US, the publisher's main focus is on introducing new and classic Japanese works to an international audience. Specifically, it targets teenagers and young adults with its manga-based fiction series.
Another area of focus for Kodansha is promoting the works of Japan's most popular literary artists. These are known as mangaka (manga writers).
For example, NISIOISIN is a popular author who has written more than fifty novels with Kodansha and has sold more than five million copies of his work. He has written a number of popular novels such as "Seibutsu to Museibutsu no Aida" and "Doutekiheikou II."
Kodansha's director of sales and marketing Alvin Lu says that the company has recently started releasing more old manga in e-books for mobile-readers. This is because they are more likely to be a good fit for this market.
