Top Book Publishers in Ibadan

Book publishers are businesses that provide services to writers, authors and other content creators for the purpose of marketing, distributing and monetizing their work.

As a centre for literature, Ibadan has served as a literary stalk from where literature originated and spread to other parts of Africa. Its structure, culture and environment nurtured pioneer writers and continue to nurture writers today.

1. University Press PLC

University Press PLC is an Ibadan-based book publisher that publishes and sells books for the education and general reading sectors. It offers curriculum titles for pre-primary school, primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools; teacher training books; and general reading and research titles, such as biographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias and language and literature.

It is one of the oldest and most experienced publishing houses in Nigeria. It also exports to a wide selection of countries in the rest of Africa.

Founded in 1949 under the name of Oxford University Press Nigeria, it has grown to become one of the most experienced and the Nation’s foremost publishers of materials for educational and general reading. The company specializes in printing and marketing books, calendars, journals, and other publications.

The company is a member of the Nigerian Publishers Association, which works to protect the rights of authors and the book industry as a whole. It also advocates for government to ensure that books are produced and sold with high quality.

In addition, the company is involved in the production of e-books and other online services. It has a dedicated team of professionals who design, develop and publish these products.

It also promotes literacy by holding Authors’ Forum, a yearly event which brings together writers from different parts of the country. The event aims to help find solutions to the problems facing the book industry in the country.

Despite the challenges that have come with the influx of pirated books in Nigeria, UPPLC remains committed to its customers and the community at large. The company has recently hosted an awards ceremony to recognise its staff for their hard work and dedication.

According to Mr Samuel Kolawole, the managing director of University Press PLC, the company was determined to grow and improve. He urged members of staff to continue working hard to take the company to the next level. He commended them for their efforts and hoped that they would build careers with the company.

Currently, the company has a share price of 2.94 NGN and it is expected to gain further growth over time. This price indicates that investors can expect lucrative or more profitable dividends and returns as the company’s financial performance increases.

2. Literamed Publications

Book publishing is one of the most important and lucrative businesses in the world. In fact, it is the pride of our civilization and has a major role to play in education and communication.

But the process of making books is not an easy task and it requires specialized skills. It is a complex industry with many challenges cutting across writers, printers, publishers and booksellers. These include sellable ideas, book commissioning, pre-press and post-press issues, royalty payment, inadequate infrastructure such as electricity, lack of credit facility, poor readership, piracy among others.

In 1969, Otunba Yinka Lawal Solarin incorporated Literamed Publications Nigeria Limited and the first product was Medipharm - medical index of pharmaceutical specialties in Nigeria. After a successful publication of Medipharm, the company went on to publish Steps to Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning for the school children. In addition, the firm started the Lantern Books imprint which today has become one of Nigeria’s leading educational publishing houses.

The company is one of the few in the country to own its own press and exercises full control from manuscript to production, thus ensuring the availability of high-quality books. The company also has a subsidiary for the publishing of Comics Hut which tells indigenous African stories with good moral values while Living Scrolls are Bible stories in pictures.

Literaryamed has been in operation for nearly forty years and is the oldest indigenous publishing firm in the country. The company has a reputation for producing quality books that are well-researched and are in compliance with international standards.

They have published over forty books for kids and young adults. Most of their books are aimed at improving reading skills, encouraging reading habits and making the learning process fun. Their products are available in all major bookstores and online outlets in Nigeria.

The company has a staff of over 190 and the work culture of their employees is generally positive. Their staff are very committed to their work and they strive to improve the quality of their jobs by educating themselves. They are also very supportive of their fellow staff in terms of career development. They also provide a number of benefits to their employees including free uniform, remuneration, free lunch and other perks.

3. Agbowo Magazine

Agbowo Magazine is a literary and art platform that helps creative Africans reach the global audience. It offers a literary journal, a yearly magazine, an art events platform and a publishing arm. It has published a number of works of literary and visual art since its launch in 2017 as well as three issues--X, Limits, Memory--of an annual, themed magazine to numerous plaudits.

Founded in 2017, Agbowo is the brainchild of two graduates from the University of Ibadan, Habeeb Kolade and Dolapo Amusat. They wanted to launch an African journal that would offer a stable space for creative Africans, one that would match editorial excellence with structural diligence.

As a result, they created a new online literary journal that was modeled after the UK’s The Rialto, but with a distinct local flair. The journal features short fiction, poetry, and essays from across Africa.

The literary and arts journal publishes work from writers in Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, DR Congo, South Africa and the African diaspora. It is also home to a number of literary awards.

It was initially a collection of writing by students from the University of Ibadan, but it has since expanded into a journal that publishes both prose and poetry. It is also an event platform, featuring live music and spoken word performances by artists from the continent.

A team of editors is responsible for reading and responding to submissions for the magazine. It is currently accepting poems, essays and short stories that explore the theme “Limits.” The team is particularly interested in submitting work about people who are pushed to their limits by their circumstances or the world at large.

Besides its online literary journal, Agbowo Magazine also holds a yearly art event where it invites artists to curate an exhibition of their work. This event has been held twice in the past, and it will be held again in 2021.

This year, the team is also launching a new schedule for reading and responding to submissions, divided into four quarters: January - March, April - June, July - September and October - December. The schedule will allow for the best of submissions to be read and responded to at their fastest pace.

4. Atelewo

Founded on the 1st of June, 2017 as a response to the myriads of challenges and threats facing the preservation and survival of Yoruba culture and language. The group’s goal is to promote cultural values, drive dialogues among the youth and preserve Yoruba literature materials.

The organisation has also launched an annual Atelewo Prize for Yoruba Literature in 2020, a literary competition open to previously unpublished writers working in the language. This is to ensure that writing in the Yoruba language is not lost to time, and that writers are well equipped with quality literary materials.

It was founded by Oredola Ibrahim and Rasaq Malik, both graduates of the University of Ibadan. They are a team of young and energetic artists who have taken up the challenge to promote Yoruba culture through creative expressions, value reorientation and capacity building.
