The book industry in Uganda is one of the most well developed in Africa. Thanks to the National Book Policy and donor-supported SUPER (Support to Uganda Primary Education Reform) projects, high quality textbooks are now on the bookshelves of Uganda’s school children.
However, much of the country’s knowledge is still outside schools’ curricula and is largely undocumented. This is why we need more local authors to write books that promote socio-economic development in Uganda.
MK Publishers
Among the many book publishers in the city of Kampala, MK Publishers (U) Limited stands out as a top performer in the category of educational publications. The company has a plethora of notable publications, ranging from textbooks to novels. The company also boasts an impressive number of offices and warehouses across the country. Keeping abreast of the latest innovations in the publishing industry, MK Publishers aims to be an innovative and progressive company at all times. The company is the proud recipient of the coveted accolade of being a member of the Uganda Book Manufacturers Association. The organization is a not for profit organisation which promotes and enhances trade between publishers in the nation.
Bookpoint Uganda
Located in one of the many upmarket malls, Bookpoint Uganda sells international bestsellers, classics and popular African novels. It is run by a woman who gave up her career as a civil engineer to open the business. She tries to keep prices close to those of international markets, although they are still too high for most Ugandans.
However, the cost of reading is slowly eroding in this part of the world as people realise how important it is to be able to read for work and personal success. It is a catch-22 situation that can only be solved by people investing in their reading abilities, and by governments ensuring that all children receive the chance to read.
Using her own savings, Ms Sembatya started a library of books which is available to children for a fee of $30 per year. She says her scheme is intended to help stop reading being regarded as a purely middle-class luxury. She wants it to be a way of giving kids a break from the daily grind of life in Kampala and encouraging them to become readers. The library also helps to promote reading culture as motorbike taxis, or boda bodas, whizz around the capital, delivering a week's worth of books for children.
StreetLib Uganda
StreetLib Uganda is a digital publishing portal for authors and publishers in Uganda to upload their books and get them distributed to ebook retailers and digital libraries around the world. It is free to use and there are no upfront fees, merely a 10% commission from net that StreetLib pays on your behalf after every sale has been made.
In Kampala, there is a huge appetite for reading. People are willing to spend money on books, even those written by international authors. For example, South African journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika’s best-selling memoir Nothing Left To Steal costs 140,000 Ugandan shillings (about $42) in bookshops here but it is available online for less than a third of that price.
Christina Kakeeto, a civil engineer who opened a book shop called Bookpoint, says many Ugandans are reading more now that they have more money. She has seen a big rise in people buying books especially for their children.
Some of them are reading for pleasure and others are pursuing a more academic interest. She is working on a project to promote reading and has set up a library that will lend children books for a $30 fee per year. She is hoping to stop the attitude that reading is something only rich people can afford and make it a more affordable option for poorer people.
Another way to encourage reading is through book clubs. There are several such groups here, including one run by a Ugandan teacher, Mary Sembatya. She set up the scheme with her savings and says it has helped children in her neighbourhood to read more and enjoy their books.
There are also several bookshops in Kampala. For example, Bookpoint is stocked with international bestsellers and classics. In addition, there are more upmarket bookstores in the newer malls.
Then there are those that focus on more traditional books, like the Fountain Publishers. This is a company with a very strong publishing history and a main production facility at Makerere University, the country's main higher institute of learning.
Despite the fact that there are so many good book publishers in Uganda, there is still a need for more of them. As Uganda grows, there is a need for more and more books, both in print and digital formats. There is also a need to improve the quality of books and help them reach more readers, especially in areas such as education, health, business and entrepreneurship.
Bookshops in Kampala
A bookshop may not seem like a worthy addition to your list of must see destinations, but with the right amount of research and attention to detail it can be a fun way to while away an afternoon with a good book. In addition to a plethora of book titles to choose from, these stores are often run by staff who take a genuine interest in their customers and the books that they sell. For instance, the staff at Aristoc Books in Old Kampala took the time to learn what I was looking for so they could recommend the best reads for me. In the same vein, Book Point in Village Mall carries a good selection of books for adults and children alike. Lastly, La Fontaine Christian Bookstore in Colline House has a slew of christian titles to choose from.
