Top Book Publishers in Montreal

If you are an author who has a French-language manuscript that you would like to see published, there are several top book publishers in Montreal. These companies are committed to producing quality books with a high level of design and print.

They publish a wide variety of titles from general literature to theater books and children’s books. They also have a special focus on scholarly works.

Vehicule Press

Vehicule Press is a Montreal-based book publisher that has been publishing Canadian poetry, fiction, social history, and translations since 1973. It is home to the Signal Editions and Esplanade Books imprints, and has a commitment to first-time authors. The press also offers a range of services for its authors, including translations from Spanish, Polish, Arabic, and Yiddish.

Vehicule began as a co-op in 1973 on the premises of Vehicule Art Inc., one of Canada's first artist-run galleries at 61 Ste-Catherine Street West. The large space occupied by both the gallery and the press was once the Cafe Montmarte, a renowned jazz club of the 1930s.

It was here that Guy Lavoie (designer of the Vehicule Press logo), Annie Nayer, Marshalore, and Vivian Jemelka-White began using equipment inherited from Kenny Hertz's defunct Ingluvin Publications and an idle, ancient ATF Chief 20 printing press originally purchased by artist Tom Dean to print Beaux-Arts magazine. During the early years of the press, Vehicule published poetry by new American poets like Charles Olson and Allen Ginsberg, as well as Canadians such as Endre Farkas and Stephen Morrissey.

The group was a loose and creative assemblage that evoked both praise and vitriol from the press's critics and readers alike, but their work grew to be recognized and respected within Canadian poetry circles. Their writing was influenced by a variety of styles, from confessional to concrete/visual/sound to experimental poetry.

During this period, Vehicule Poets was an active and influential group, bringing new voices to the forefront of the Canadian literary scene. The poems they wrote were an extension of their readings at Vehicule Art, a venue for alternative performance art that had been established in 1970 at the Vehicule Art Gallery in Montreal, which drew poets from across the country and the world.

As the Vehicule Poets read and performed, their poetry became a focal point for their political activism. The Vehicule Poets' collective was one of the first groups in Canada to take a stand against the Vietnam War, and their publications were instrumental in exposing the government to the radical nature of their political message.

Gaspereau Press

Founded by Gary Dunfield and Andrew Steeves in 1997, Gaspereau Press is one of Canada’s leading independent publishers. Its books have been acclaimed by both readers and literary professionals. Its publications have been shortlisted for a number of national awards, and its authors have received many honours.

The publisher offers a range of services to authors. Its editorial team is comprised of highly experienced editors who are passionate about literature and want to help writers achieve their creative goals. In addition to publishing, the company also provides marketing support for its authors.

For a fee, they offer consultations and editing for non-fiction, poetry, and fiction. In addition, they can provide book cover design and layout, a service that can save you time and money.

Its books are available through bookstores and online stores. They are also sold at literary festivals and fairs around the world.

They have won three Canadian Booksellers Association awards and have been nominated for a number of other accolades. They are known for their innovative production methods and a commitment to quality.

In addition to their publications, they host events and workshops for readers. They also hold an annual wayzgoose, which is a celebration of writing and book arts.

The wayzgoose started as a small event and grew into a two-day event, with readings by authors including K.I. Press (Spine), Carmine Starnino (With English Subtitles), and David Helwig (The Year One). In the morning, a bookbinding workshop was led by Ruth Legge, and in the afternoon, a typographer and type designer gave a lecture.

They also have a number of special publications, such as their wood type print collection Literarum Ex Arboribus and the Douglas Lochhead Memorial Book Arts Talk. These are all a great resource for anyone who is interested in letterpress printing or the book arts.

Its annual wayzgoose is a great opportunity for readers to discover new books and meet the people who make them. They also hold events throughout the year, such as an open house and book arts demonstrations. It is a great place to get to know the book community in Quebec.

Linda Leith Publishing

Linda Leith is a writer and editor, as well as a translator. She is the founder of the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival and Linda Leith Publishing, and the recipient of the Order of Canada.

She is also a novelist, essayist, cultural historian, and memoirist. Her novels include Birds of Passage, The Tragedy Queen and The Desert Lake. Her books have won several awards, including the Prix Charles Lacombe and Canadas National Translation Prize.

Her writing has been translated into French and published in several other languages, as well. Her essays have been widely published in newspapers, magazines and journals. Her work has been praised by such critics as the New York Times and the London Times.

Linda Leith is a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada, and the Vice-chair of The Writers’ Union of Quebec. She has organized numerous conferences, literary festivals, and readings in Montreal.

She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Writers’ Union of Canada since 1998 and was the President of the Board from 1997 to 2010 before stepping down. She is a recipient of the Order of Canada and is an Officer in the Order of Ontario.

Whether she is translating and editing or writing novels and essays, Leith is a passionate storyteller who creates places for others to share their ideas. She is a salonniere: she gathers people together to talk about art, theatre and politics. She is an advocate for literature and a tireless promoter of Canadian voices abroad.

In her book, Leith recounts the stories of her life as a writer and an editor. She traces her education in Paris and London, her marriage and writing in Budapest, and her return to Montreal where she founded Blue Metropolis.

At the heart of her memoir is Leiths journey to find her voice. She comes to terms with the secrets of her childhood and her troubled father. Despite these struggles, she builds herself not simply a literary life but a dazzling multilingual and multinational salon in the form of Montreals Blue Metropolis literary festival.

La Courte Echelle

Created in 1978, La courte echelle is the first Quebec publishing house to specialize exclusively in literature for children and young people. Its catalogue is rich in over 700 active titles, which appeal to all age groups: board books for very young children, books for beginning readers and novels for both pre-teens and teens.

The publisher is also a member of the Association de la Presse Canadien Livre (APC) and the Canadian Publishers’ Council (CPC). It has a team of two professional advisors who are familiar with the French-language publishing industry.

Upon receiving a complete manuscript, this publisher would review it within two months and then let you know if they are interested in publishing it or not. If they are, they would then ask you for the final manuscript in French.

Its staff includes editors, art directors and publicists who are devoted to the publishing of children’s literature. Its goal is to promote new authors and increase the number of titles in its catalog.

This publisher is a member of JacketFlap, a website that connects readers to more than 200,000 authors, illustrators and publishers in the children’s and young adult book industry. It is updated daily with news about books and creators in this field.

The company has an extensive list of authors, including many from Quebec. They also publish several titles by foreign writers.

It is a member of the Association de la Presse canadienne langue française (APCLF) and is a partner of the Association nationale des editeurs de livres francophones (ANEL). The Board of this organization is comprised of seasoned business professionals who are well-versed in the French-language publishing industry.

In addition to its own catalogue, it is involved in several collaborative projects, such as the ELODiL (Albums plurilingues ELODiL) multilingual picture book project for the Quebec public school system.

It is a member of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre and is responsible for selecting the winner of the Prix TD de litterature canadienne pour l’enfance et la jeunesse, a prize awarded annually to a French-language Canadian children’s book. Its judges are school librarians and representatives of the Société d’écrivaine francaise du Québec.
