If you're a writer, you probably know that getting your work published is often a process of submitting your manuscript to the big name trade publishers. But did you know that there are some smaller, independent publishing houses that can also get your work noticed?
Suzhou is home to a few of them. Whether you're looking for an art book, literary book or even a book that deals with Wu culture, you'll find it here!
KSA
KSA is a custom publishing house that publishes a range of high-quality books, travel supplements, bespoke in-house magazines and commemorative coffee table books. With offices in Hong Kong and Mainland China, it celebrates the unique cultural identity of east meets west.
KSA has been in operation since 1983 and is a leading independent publisher in China. Their main focus is to produce quality books and teaching materials that are both culturally significant and accessible. They also provide book translations and audio and video productions.
In addition to their international reputation, KSA is renowned for their ability to bring a truly unique and interesting perspective on the inner world of China to their readers. Their team of experts and writers have created a range of books that have been a great success across the country.
They have an extensive range of titles that can be customised to meet the needs of each client and are well known for their attention to detail. In addition to their wide range of fiction and non-fiction, they have a large selection of books on Chinese history, art and culture.
Their staff are all native Mandarin speakers and are fluent in English, Japanese and German. They work hard to ensure that every book they sell is delivered with a personal touch.
This is what makes them stand out from the rest of the pack. Their staff are passionate about what they do and will go the extra mile to ensure that every single book they sell is of the highest standard.
The company also has a strong reputation for their customer service. They have a dedicated customer support team, and their agents are always happy to answer any questions that customers may have.
As a result, they have been able to become one of the top book publishers in Suzhou. Their books are a hit with both local and international readers, and they have a long list of clients that they regularly represent.
Aside from their book publishing, they also have an extensive range of music albums that are available for download on iTunes and Google Play. They also have a great selection of DVDs and Blu-Rays.
ZUP
ZUP (pronounced 'zhi-ji-guo p-n-p') Publishing Company, established in 1984, is one of the leading academic and art publishers in China. It specializes in high-quality books, teaching materials, journals and audio and video publications.
The company is committed to promoting global exchange of knowledge through scholarly publication, educational and cultural communication. Its publications include books on science, technology, literature, history, culture, education and art. Its publishing division also publishes a variety of society journals, and ZUP collaborates with academic institutions, scholars and bookstores from all over the world.
In the field of culture, ZUP has published many classic and contemporary works of Chinese and foreign artists, such as the Yungang Grottoes Collection. Its publications have won a number of book awards and are widely recognized and respected.
Besides books on culture, ZUP also produces books on psychology, business and life management and children's books. Its publications are distributed worldwide in English and Chinese.
It has won many awards, including the National Book Award of the 5th Chinese Government Award for Publishing. It is a major publisher of textbooks, reference books and academic books for the higher education market.
In addition, ZUP is also a leading e-book publisher and has developed an innovative e-book bookstore with virtual reality technology called the "Reading Channel" for the first time in 2016. The "Reading Channel" is a unique e-book store that integrates traditional bookstore elements and virtual reality technologies to create an immersive reading environment.
This is a very important part of the book industry as the modern information technology is rapidly developing, and the virtual reality and augmented reality technologies are becoming increasingly popular. In recent years, several publishing units in China have responded to the call of the times and conducted innovative development by combining their own resource advantages.
There are a number of top book publishers in Suzhou, including the China International Book Trading Corporation and Zhejiang University Press. The CIBTC is a state-owned trading company of books in professional fields and one of the country's leading forces in book exports.
The Zhejiang University Press is a leading open science publisher with a mission to "Seeking Truth, Pursuing Innovation." Its outstanding editorial services and unique experience in working with society journals will help the partnership to succeed.
Suzhou Antique Bookstore
Located in the city center, Suzhou Antique Bookstore is home to an impressive collection of books from all over China. The shop is a favorite with locals and tourists alike, and Jiang Chengbo is proud of the long tradition his family has had in rescuing and preserving old Chinese books.
The shop is a popular place to meet and chat with other book lovers, and hosts a number of events and exhibitions. They also host a variety of poetry slams and round-table discussions, as well as a reading club that meets every Tuesday evening.
As a result, the store has a dedicated community of avid readers who love their books and look forward to seeing new titles on the shelves. The staff members are all friendly and helpful, and will point you in the right direction.
In addition to books, the store also has a large selection of traditional Chinese antique furniture. This includes tables, desks and chairs dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.
While these pieces are not for everyone, they’re worth the trip to Suzhou. They’re an excellent way to learn about the history of the country, and are a great souvenir for those looking for something unique.
One of the best things to buy at this store is a sandalwood fan, which are made from thin ornately stamped sheets of sandalwood that have been dipped in a special oil and then dried. They generate a delightful fragrance, and are a classic Suzhou item that is widely available.
Despite the ubiquity of these folding fans, they’re not cheap. You’ll have to be prepared to spend a few extra dollars to get a good quality piece, and they’re unlikely to last very long either.
Aside from books, the bookstore also sells souvenirs such as silk worms, turtles and fish. It also has a tea shop where you can sample their famous green tea, Biluochun.
The bookshop is located in an historic district that has been home to the Chinese for over a thousand years, and offers a fascinating glimpse of traditional life. The area is a mix of old and new, with old buildings lining the canals while modern architecture dominates the rest of the city.
The Bookworm
Founded as a library in 2002, The Bookworm turned into a hip hangout for book lovers, and later opened outposts in Chengdu and Suzhou. It grew into a cultural institution with cafes, film screenings and its own literary festival.
Founder Peter Goff moved to China in 2001 as a journalist for the Daily Telegraph, and he quickly decided to make the country his home. The idea for a bookstore that combines a library, café and live event space took shape during this time. Eventually, he quit journalism to focus on his business.
Today, the Bookworm Group is a literary institution in its own right, with outlets in Beijing, Chengdu and Suzhou. It hosts an annual Literary Festival in each of its three cities, and operates a publishing house that publishes contemporary Chinese literature in both the original language and in translation.
The Bookworm is a key player in China’s emerging literary scene. The organization aims to create a platform for a wide range of writers, including those who are new to the country, by creating opportunities to meet with readers and authors at events held across the country.
While The Bookworm’s main focus has always been on literature, it is also a community centre that helps international and local writers connect with their audiences in China. It has helped build a strong network of writers, and many of its writers have gone on to find work with major publishers in the west.
It has also given international writers a glimpse of the Chinese reading audience, which is rapidly growing in popularity. This is because young people are increasingly focusing on their own culture and becoming interested in Chinese literature.
Another important player in the literary scene in China is the Paper Republic. The organization facilitates literary connections between the world and China, and has a number of projects, including Pathlight, which features English translations of Chinese literature.
In addition to its publishing arm, The Bookworm is launching a new literary award that will be given to a previously unpublished novel by an Chinese author, and hopes to raise awareness of Chinese writing and its potential as a source of contemporary literature in the international stage.
