Book publishing in Israel is small, but energetic and offers good opportunities for foreign publishers. With a population of seven million, it has a strong appetite for books.
As part of Hebrew Book Week, the National Library of Israel has released its annual report on book publishing in Israel. It shows that 7,344 printed books were published last year in Hebrew.
Peli Press
Peli Press is one of the most famous and oldest book publishers in Israel. They publish a wide range of books and journals in Hebrew, English and Arabic. They are also a leading printer and binder in the country, and are based in Tel Aviv.
The history of Peli Press is closely intertwined with that of the city of Tel Aviv. Bracha Peli, who was born Bronya Kutzenok in Starovitsky (Ukraine), was a pioneer of Jewish publishing in the Ukrainian village where she had grown up. In her early twenties she met Meir Pilipovetsky, who was a Zionist tutor and member of the youth movement. Together they travelled from their home in Starovitsky to Odessa and then on to Tel Aviv, arriving there in 1921 when the young couple was completely penniless and living from trainload to trainload of sugar as the Ukrainian pogroms were still in full swing.
Despite the chaos of the First World War and the ravages of pogroms in their new land, Meir and Bronya continued to believe that Palestine would eventually become a state. In the end, it was Meir who volunteered to serve in the army and Bronya who became an active member of a local Jewish community.
After the war, she and Meir set up a publishing house in Jerusalem called Massadah, and under their joint management they published the encyclopedia of Israel's history, "The General Encyclopedia," which was to be the largest book in Palestine at the time. They later expanded into a vast co-publishing venture with the Bialik Institute, an organisation affiliated with the World Zionist Organization.
In the meantime, the family's business, Moriah, had become a major bookstore and wholesale distributor of imported and domestic literature throughout the country. At the urging of the League for the Protection of the Hebrew Language, they organized an exhibition of books in Hebrew which was to be one of the defining events in the literary life of the country.
With the death of Meir in 1958, his wife, Bracha Peli (the surname changed from Pilipovetsky at the initiative of her son Alexander), continued to work with her books until she died in Tel Aviv at the age of ninety-four. Her assets were divided between her son Alexander, who founded the English publishing company Massadah Press, and her grandson Yoav Barash, who was to become director of both the Hebrew publishing division and the printing establishment.
Am Oved
One of the oldest and most established of all Israeli publishers, Am Oved publishes a broad range of literature in both Hebrew and English. Its flagship series is the Sifriyah La'am, which has published more than 800 titles since its inception. Its children and young readers department is also a leading force, publishing world classics in translation as well as numerous bestselling Israeli works by authors such as David Grossman, Haya Shenhav and Yossi Aboulafia.
The Sifriyah La'am is a highly successful showcase for the work of Israeli writers, many of whom are household names, including Eli Amir, Hayim Be'er, Ida Fink and Moshe Ron, among others. The publisher also offers a large range of non-fiction, ranging from science and nature to history, philosophy and psychology.
Some of Am Oved's most popular titles include a range of older classics by Balzac, Chekhov, Conrad, Dickens, Dostoyevski, Flaubert, James and Kafka, as well as a number of contemporary writers. Its science fiction series is also a stalwart of the industry, publishing many classic titles in its own right, such as Frank Herbert, Robert Heinlein and Roger Zelazny.
Other Am Oved publications include fiction by some of Israel's most important writers, as well as a significant body of non-fiction and children and young readers' books. Its Sifriyah La'am series of literary fiction is widely considered the most popular in Israel, with 16 new books per year.
Its other notable publishing projects include a series of books in Hebrew about Israel and the Arab world, including The Arabs in Israel; A Holistic Approach to Architecture: The Felicja Blumenthal Music Center and Library, Tel Aviv; and Jewish Culture: History, Religion and Society. Its active non-fiction program includes the acclaimed Ofakim series, with titles in a variety of fields: science and nature, history, social studies, psychology and philosophy.
Am Oved also publishes several novels in Hebrew that are not available in the English language, including two by Haim Be'er and three by Sami Michael. These novels are a window into Israel's social and literary past, which often seems at odds with the country's present, though they still convey the "wonderful Jewish virtues of wit, humanity and idealism."
Achuzat Bayit
Achuzat Bayit is one of the top book publishers in Tel Aviv. It publishes a variety of books, including poetry, fiction and children's books. The books are geared towards the Jewish public, but some of them are also suitable for non-Jewish readers.
Achuzat Bayit was founded in 1909 by several dozen families who gathered on the sand dunes outside Jaffa to allocate plots of land for a new neighbourhood they called Ahuzat Bayit ('homestead' in Hebrew). It was a time of peak Jewish immigration: neighborhoods in Yafo were becoming overcrowded, and many immigrants wished to have their own 'Judenrein' - their own place of national life.
The founders wished to build a European-style garden suburb of Jaffa, with wide streets and boulevards. They also hoped that the neighbourhood would give their young families a sense of Jewish identity.
To divide their land fairly, the founding families held a lottery: Akiva Arieh Weiss, a prominent figure in the construction of Tel Aviv, paired 66 grey seashells with 66 white shells, assigning each family a plot number on the white shells. In 1910, the neighborhood was renamed Tel Aviv ('spring hill' in Hebrew) and became the first modern Hebrew city.
Today, Tel Aviv is Israel's business and cultural center. The city is home to several major economic institutions, including the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and the Diamond Exchange, as well as an impressive arts scene.
Besides a great variety of restaurants, Tel Aviv is a lively and cosmopolitan city with a unique sense of place. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with a variety of beaches and promenades, but it is not just the beach that draws tourists to Tel Aviv.
The Tel Aviv Museum of Art houses an excellent collection of works by artists from throughout Israel. The museum also has a fascinating exhibit dedicated to the founding of Tel Aviv.
Take a walk down Rothschild Boulevard and inspect the spots where Tel Aviv was born 100 years ago. You'll be able to see the first buildings and gardens, and the growth that took place in the 1930s. There's even a monument commemorating the founders. You'll learn about their stories, and how they were instrumental in shaping the city we know today.
Schocken
Schocken, which publishes a wide range of books, is one of the most popular book publishers in Tel Aviv. Its list includes a large number of literary works by Jewish authors.
The firm was founded in 1937 in Mandatory Palestine by Salman Schocken, a German-Jewish businessman who had immigrated to Israel in 1934. It was initially named Schocken Verlag, after the company in Berlin that he founded in 1931. When the Nazis closed the Verlag in 1933, Schocken opened his own publishing house in Jerusalem.
In his early years in Israel, he was a devoted supporter of the Zionist movement. But his personal relationships with political leaders, especially David Ben-Gurion, were tense. He was even arrested for treason during the 1948 war with Egypt.
When he died in 1959, Schocken left his family with a modestly successful publishing house that was able to survive for several decades. He was succeeded by his daughter Raheli Edelman, who refocused the company on quality children’s books and on the publication of contemporary Israeli fiction.
The publishing house has also produced a substantial number of books on the history of Judaism. Its catalogue, a selection of some three hundred titles, covers subjects from the Hebrew Bible to modern literature.
Its list also includes translations of Homer, Shakespeare, Flaubert, Schopenhauer, and Machiavelli; as well as Finnish and Babylonian epics. In addition to literary translations, the catalogue offers a variety of non-fiction titles including Thomas Macaulay’s essays on British colonialism in India.
As a result of its focus on the Hebrew language, the catalog is rich in Jewish literature and has a distinctly Hebrew flavor. In addition to translations, the publisher also publishes a variety of Hebrew-language children’s books and plays.
Another major feature of the Schocken catalog is a series called the Library, which contains books on Jewish history and culture in general. This includes books on the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
During the 1982 Israel-Lebanon war, when Prime Minister Menachem *Begin and his defense minister, Ariel Sharon, broke their promises of a limited incursion into Lebanon, Haaretz’s editorial position was critical. It strove to expose the corruption of officials.
