While the overall book market has suffered in recent years, there are still many people who love to read. That said, the book industry in Myanmar is going through a tough period.
Despite the difficulties, there are still some top book publishers in Yangon. We sat down with some of them at the Winter Book Fair.
1. Bookworm Books
Bookworm Books is one of the most popular stores in Yangon, attracting 'bookworms' from all ages and from many different countries. This bookstore has a large selection of both new and second hand fiction for children and adults and non-fiction on all topics. They have books on history, science, arts and crafts, religion, sports, cooking, health, self help and much more.
It also has a huge discount section with hundreds of books at half price and plenty of books for young people. It is the perfect place for anyone looking to pick up a good book, but who doesn't want to pay for it.
In addition, the store has a wide range of foreign magazines and newspapers to read. It is a great place to grab a book and sit down with your cup of coffee while you enjoy a nice read!
As a matter of fact, this is the best place to buy a book in Myanmar if you're interested in reading local literature. It has a great selection of Burmese and English books that are based on the country's history and culture, as well as books about Southeast Asia and general fiction.
The store has a very friendly owner who is very knowledgeable about his books and is always willing to make recommendations for good reading material. It also has a decent selection of George Orwell collections and a significant amount of literature that is mainly about Burma/Myanmar.
Aside from the book shop, it has a cafe that serves delicious coffee as you read. The coffee is made with fresh beans from a nearby farm. It's a great way to start your day or to wind down after a long day of shopping or sightseeing.
2. Innwa Books
If you are a bookworm and want to buy books in Myanmar, Innwa Books is the place for you. You can browse through their large selection of books, including fiction for preschoolers, teens and adults. They also have a large collection of non-fiction with a range of subjects, such as history, science, arts and crafts, religion, geography and more. The store also has a very extensive discount section with hundreds of books at half price and a big collection of second hand books to buy at special prices.
Innwa Books is a well-known, centrally-located bookstore that offers a decent (by Yangon standards) selection of English-language books and magazines. Its selection includes popular titles such as Time, Reader’s Digest, National Geographic, Fortune, Marie Claire, The Oprah Magazine, Seventeen and more.
There is also a good selection of English-language children’s books to choose from, as well as books on parenting and self-help. The shop also sells dictionaries and other reference materials.
The books in the store have been carefully selected to cater to local interests, and the staff can help you find anything you are looking for. The shop is a great place to visit for tourists on their Myanmar tours.
In addition to a large selection of books, Innwa Books has a well-stocked café that serves hot coffee and tea. It is also a great place to sit back and enjoy a good book on one of their comfy couches.
Despite an increasing demand for books, the cost of original copies can be prohibitive to many people in Myanmar. Several publishers have claimed that they face structural challenges in the country’s publishing industry, including rising rents and poor distribution systems. In 2019, a new copyright law was adopted that will impact nearly 2822 registered publishing businesses in the country. It is still unclear when the law will take effect, but author and historian Thant Myint U published a legal notice in the state-run Kyemon daily asking bookstores and stalls to stop selling pirated copies of his most recent book, The Hidden History of Burma.
3. Roads to Yangon
The city of Yangon, Myanmar's largest and the country's former capital, has an extensive and growing network of roads. This is a key part of the government's plan to develop the country into a regional powerhouse.
The main routes connect major cities such as Mandalay, Pyay and Bago. However, the country's poor infrastructure makes travel time long and difficult for people living in rural areas.
If you're looking to avoid the hassle of navigating the country's road network, consider taking a train or a bus. There are also horse carts that ferries tourists around small towns in the countryside, but they're often unreliable and don't have air-conditioning, so it's worth checking the weather before booking.
A good way to get a feel for the country's history is to explore its heritage buildings. These buildings date back to the eighteenth century and are a reminder of the country's colonial past.
One of the oldest is the 108-year-old Central Press, an iconic building that still prints gazettes and other publications commissioned by the government. It is located in a historic area of town, on the corner of Mogul Street and Mahabandula Road.
As the old capital's most iconic building, it has received a commemorative Blue Plaque. It is a hulking structure that sits atop a hill, but has good ventilation and is well-built.
Despite its age, the press is still functional and it is open to the public for readings and book fairs. Its premises are also used for printing books on local and national issues, including Myanmar's political and economic development.
A recent op-ed in the Eleven Media Group, published by the Myanmar Times, raises concerns over the proposed New Yangon development and its impact on the country's sovereignty. It suggests the project could resemble a Chinese "debt trap" that would threaten national sovereignty.
4. Sarpay Lawka
Sarpay Lawka is a publishing house that offers books on religion, culture and philosophy. The company has a network of book stores in Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay. The company also provides translations and reprints of foreign books.
Sarpay Lawka’s products include books on religion, philosophy, and the history of Myanmar. The company has a team of dedicated employees who work hard to produce quality books.
They also offer services such as editing and proofreading. They offer both English and Burmese language books and also publish foreign languages such as French, German and Japanese.
In addition to books, they also sell other kinds of products such as stationery and gifts. They have a website where customers can order books online.
Atta Kyaw is the owner of Sarpay Lawka and has been publishing books since 1997. He is a writer and has written many books on different topics such as parenting, thinking and life.
He is the author of the books “The Art of Parenting,” “Livable Life, Clear Conscious and A Peaceful Mind” and "Successful Living." In addition, he has authored several articles in newspapers and journals as well.
His books have won several awards including the National Literary Award and Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award. He is also a member of the Burma Research Society.
Daw Kyan started as a junior research officer in the Burma Historical Commission in 1959 and was promoted to a senior research officer a year later. She continued to write research papers and presented them at seminars held by the Burma Research Society (BRS) at Kanthar Sane Lei, the Ghandi Hall and Sarpay Beikman Building.
Daw Kyan’s work has been published by various book publishers and her books have won many awards. She was a very popular author in her time and her books are now widely read.
5. Wisdom of Light Book House
A little less well known than Sarpay Lawka, Wisdom of Light Book House has been around for nearly a century. They've published Buddhist texts and also publish fiction, non-fiction, children's books, and poetry. They have a few branches in the city and are run by the children of their founder, who died last year.
This is one of the more unique Burma-based booksellers. It's not in Yangon, and they don't have a website (or Facebook page, for that matter).
In fact, I was surprised to see this bookstore win this award as I always thought Sarpay Lawka was the oldest trade publisher in the country. But they've been around for a long time and it's worth mentioning in case you are ever in Mandalay.
The Myanmar Publishers and Booksellers Association holds a awards ceremony each year to recognise nascent and long-established booksellers, publishers and distributors. They are a relatively formal group, with members spread across the country. This year, they awarded lifetime accomplishment, bestselling publishing house and best publishing house awards at the Shwe U Daung Hall on Theinphyu Road in downtown Yangon.
