If you are interested in working as a book publisher, you need to have a strong knowledge of the industry. This includes knowing how to write and edit books, as well as how to sell them.
In order to succeed, you need to be able to work well with people and understand how to get things done quickly. You also need to be able to make good decisions and take risks.
Sub-Saharan Publishers
Sub-Saharan publishers have produced some of the best books in Africa, but they are often overlooked by international donors. This is particularly true in Cameroon.
The book industry is a crucial part of every nation’s culture and is often overlooked by the international community. Unlike other industries such as sports, music and cinema where international monetary support can make a difference in the country’s fortunes, the book industry in Africa does not enjoy the same esteem.
Nevertheless, the book industry has contributed significantly to the growth of many African countries. The book industry, like any other sphere of national life, needs patronage and support from the government. It also requires international partnership.
Scholarly publishing is an important element of research dissemination and knowledge sharing. However, it is a challenging and time-consuming process. This is because it involves extensive consultations and negotiations between researchers, editors and the publisher.
It is also necessary to consider language considerations. If a manuscript is written in a language that does not have the same level of formality as English, it may be rejected by scholarly journals.
This is especially true in the humanities and social sciences where scholars are required to express their views in a certain way. This can be a major impediment to the publication of scholarship that has significant impact on society.
In some cases, researchers will also be asked to translate their research findings into another language. This is often a difficult task, and it can be dangerous.
Therefore, it is essential for a sub-Saharan scholar to have access to personal computers, e-mail and the Internet. Unless they have these, they will not be able to submit their manuscripts and read other scholars’ work electronically.
Similarly, it is important for sub-Saharan scholars to be aware of the different political and social systems in their countries. This will help them to avoid pitfalls and ensure that their research is well contextualized. It will also make them more familiar with the history and culture of their respective countries. In addition, this will allow them to produce scholarly publications that are relevant and useful in their home countries.
Bakwa Books
Bakwa Books, a publishing house based in Yaounde, is dedicated to literary fiction and creative nonfiction. The publishing house is the offspring of Bakwa Magazine, the first Anglophone culture and politics publication in Cameroon. The publisher was founded by Dzekashu MacViban.
In the years since its founding, Bakwa Magazine has been an incubator for new writers and a hub of critical thought. It has facilitated a cultural conversation around issues that matter to its readership, from the country’s Anglophone crisis to social customs, religion, superstition and witchcraft to suicide attempts and AIDS stigma.
It’s this focus on cultural conversations that has made Bakwa Books a vital publishing platform for Cameroon’s rising literary stars. It also plays a crucial role in promoting a more diverse range of voices that reflect the richness of the African continent.
The publisher’s newest release is Of Passion and Ink: New Voices from Cameroon, an anthology of new writing that explores contemporary Cameroon and the complexities of the Anglophone crisis. It features the work of young Cameroonian writers who write in English and French, including Dipita Kwa, Bengono Essola Edouard, Monique Kwachou, Dzekashu MacViban, Howard M-B Maximus, Nkiacha Atemnkeng, A Bouna Guazong and Rita Bakop.
While the stories in Of Passion and Ink address a variety of complex and interconnected issues, they are all united by the sense that the Cameroonian landscape is a complex ecosystem. It’s a fusion of geography, shifting linguistic registers and a host of cultural practices that influence the lives of people in every part of the country, from the central capital city to rural towns, from urban areas to the vast savanna.
Among other things, the book’s focus on culture and politics has drawn attention to Cameroon’s two politico-cultural systems, which have always clashed. During the last decade, however, a conscious community has formed, with writers and artists taking on the task of exploring the many facets of the nation’s complex history through literature.
With Bakwa’s support, Howard Meh-Buh Maximus is preparing a collection of short stories that capture the predicament facing Cameroon’s English-speaking communities and the myriad ways in which these struggles are redefining the country’s landscape. It’s a work that’s been influenced by his time at Bakwa and in the diaspora, as well as by the literary output of his father, Johnnie MacViban, whose novel Twilight of Crooks was published in 2009.
Esprit Malalee
The book industry in Cameroon may be lagging behind its counterparts in Africa, but the good news is it isn’t dead yet. In fact, there are a few notable independent publishers in the country, including Esprit Malalee, which is the top of its class when it comes to producing books of all kinds, including novels, non-fiction and children’s literature. The company has been in business since 2005 and it has a solid following among book lovers. It has a well-stocked catalogue of books in all categories, and its catalogue is complemented by a lively online presence where you can find the latest news in the literary world. In fact, its e-book catalogue is one of the most popular on the continent. The company also specializes in creating customized e-books for customers.
African Writers Foundation
The African Writers Foundation is an organization in Yaounde, Cameroon that aims to promote writing in Africa. The organization works to improve the literary scene in Africa through mentoring young writers, publishing books, and promoting their work.
The foundation also sponsors writing workshops and events to help new writers develop their craft. In addition, they offer scholarships to African authors.
African literature is well-appraised, receiving accolades and success stories from both the home-based and global literary scenes. This is a great thing, and it's not uncommon to see modern African writers across genres having beautiful breakthroughs.
Nevertheless, many writers still struggle to get published in international publications. This is especially true of African writers who are trying to break into the Western markets.
This is why the African Writers Foundation is so important. The foundation offers programs to help African writers gain confidence and pride in their work, while also assisting them to become published in the West.
The foundation consists of an editorial team and a fund to assist indigenous publishers in publishing the best African creative works. In addition, they are able to fund reading tours, distribution channels, and any other necessary services that will benefit both the writer and the publisher.
As for the foundation's editorial team, they are highly qualified and can identify the best manuscripts from African writers. They can then recommend them to an African indigenous publisher.
They can also help with the publication of the book, including distributing it to stores and libraries. In addition, they can organize reading tours to boost readership for the book.
For the fund, they are relying on donations from readers. This will help them continue to support writers throughout their career.
There are many African writers in the world who are making significant contributions to the literary scene through their beautiful storytelling. Some of these include Joshua Chizoma, who was recently shortlisted for the 2022 AKO Caine Prize with his short story "Collector of Memories."
Other prominent African writers are Nnedi Okorafor, whose comics have garnered a number of awards and recognition. She also founded Africanfuturist Productions to focus on producing television.
