Top Book Publishers in Zhengzhou

As one of the most important sectors in the Chinese publishing industry, book publishing has seen rapid growth over the past five to ten years. Some of the top publishers include People’s Literature Publishing House, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House and Shanghai Century Publishing Group among others.

1. People’s Literature Publishing House

People’s Literature Publishing House is a large-scale, member of China Publishing Group and is well known for publishing scholarly publications, editions of classical Chinese literature, dictionaries and high-quality paperbacks. It is one of the most respected and authoritative publishing companies in China.

The Press’s major departments include the Daylight Publishing, specializing in children’s books; the New Literary History, Contemporary, Selection of Chinese Literary and Chinese Learner’s Companion magazines and journals; and the Chinese Literature Research Institute. It also publishes textbooks, reference material and teaching guides.

It was founded in 1951 and is the largest professional publishing institution in China specializing in literature. It has a great number of exclusive publishing resources, a strong reputation among readers and has won many national literary and publishing prizes.

The press has a robust translation program. It has acquired the Chinese-language rights to a series of African classics including five by Nobel laureate Ahmed Gurnah, six of Mozambique’s Mia Couto’s novels translated from Portuguese and eight by Nigeria’s Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It also publishes an anthology of poetry from indigenous African languages.

2. Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press

The Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, or FLTRP for short, was founded in 1979 and is a subsidiary of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). It has become one of the top publishers in the country thanks to its focus on foreign language education and extensive international collaboration.

The press has a robust publishing program that spans preschool, basic, intermediate and advanced levels. Its award-winning textbooks and learning aids are aimed at students from all walks of life.

The company also boasts a comprehensive online service with a plethora of digital offerings including video lectures, e-books and other educational content. They are also active in promoting cultural exchange between China and the world through their publishing and digital services. Among the company’s other accomplishments is the patented invention of the paperless book - a novel approach to e-book production. It has a devoted team of professionals with years of experience in the field.

3. Jindun (Golden Shield) Publishing House

One of the most impressive feats of modern technology is the publishing industry’s ability to churn out millions of books in record time. The industry s collective output of over 500,000 titles per year is nothing to be trifled with, and a large proportion of these are printed on demand. It is no surprise that several companies stand out as the industry leaders in their field. The most prominent is probably the Shanghai Science and Technology Publishing Group, but it does not hurt that this company is also home to a few other prestigious publications.

The other notable publisher is the General Logistics Department of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which is a bit of a mouthful to say, but the oh so clever name of the company’s illustrious book division is Jindun (Golden Shield). The group boasts more than 6,000 employees and a burgeoning list of awards and accolades. In fact, a recent survey by the media ranked Jindun as number one on the list of Chinese book publishing companies.

4. The Commercial Press

The Commercial Press (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ) is one of the most well-known publishing organisations in China. It has been in operation for more than a century and is a key publisher of both academic works and popular titles in Chinese and foreign languages.

The company was founded in Shanghai in 1897 and has since grown into a global enterprise. It publishes a variety of academic works, textbooks and reference books in English, Chinese and other languages.

In the last 100 years, it has published more than 30 thousand titles. It also has a number of subsidiary companies in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Taiwan.

The company has also invested in several other cities in inland China. These include Taiyuan in 2004 and Chengdu in 2009. Nevertheless, the success of Foxconn in Zhengzhou is more broadly the result of a local government’s efforts to attract foreign capital, build a manufacturing ecosystem and weave together public services for new residents through public-private partnerships.

5. Shanghai Century Publishing Group

Shanghai Century Publishing Group specializes in the publication of books and other media. It has a portfolio of over 6000 titles.

The company publishes a variety of professional books on machine building, architecture, communication, and other fields. They also publish textbooks on information technology and books in electronic format.

They have a strong presence in the Chinese market and are able to produce high-quality books. They also have a wide network of sales channels.

These include offline bookstores, online stores, and book fairs. They are preparing to expand their business.

The company is a major player in the language reference book market, a category that is growing rapidly. They have a variety of dictionaries that are popular among Chinese readers. They have also compiled a series of world-renowned academic works on philosophy and social sciences. These works have been translated into Chinese and published in several volumes.

6. Zhonghua Book Company

Zhonghua Book Company is a distinguished publishing house that specializes in ancient books and classics. It has over 1,000 employees, and was established in Shanghai in 1912 before moving to Beijing in 1954.

It publishes over 12,000 titles each year, with annual gross sales of RMB240 million. Its main focus is on ancient Chinese literature and history, including 13 important Buddhist texts.

The company also publishes general interest titles and a variety of magazines. It is a leader in the social science field, and has several high-profile magazines, such as Du Shu (Reading), SDX Weekly, and Music Lovers.

The lifestyle book market is a major area of activity, with all kinds of self-guided tour books and picture travel guides becoming steady sellers. Health books have also become popular in the past two years.

7. Zhejiang Children’s Books Publishing House

The Zhejiang Children’s Books Publishing House is one of the leading book publishers in China. It specializes in the publishing of children’s literature, youth books and other publications.

In recent years, Chinese children’s books have won a great deal of praise worldwide. For example, White Fox, a children’s novel written by Chinese author Chen Jiatong, was included on the Financial Times’ “Best books of 2019: Children’s books” list and has won a lot of attention from British readers.

Aside from literary works, many publishers also publish science and technology books for children. The Hunan Science & Technology Press, for example, has acquired the translation rights to Stephen W. Hawking’s A Brief History of Time, which has sold 150,000 copies in Chinese translation.

In addition, more and more foreign book publishers are taking note of China’s children’s books industry. At such international book fairs as Bologna, Frankfurt, and Abu Dhabi, exhibition stands of Chinese companies that publish children’s books attract a lot of attention from foreign exhibitors.

8. Jieli Publishing House

China is accelerating its efforts to expand into the world publication market, and cooperation between Chinese publishers and their foreign counterparts is increasing. At the 14th Beijing International Book Fair held in August, more than 5,000 cooperation letters of intent were signed.

The Chinese version of the Twilight Saga, a popular fantasy series written by Stephanie Meyer, has sold 4.24 million copies and earned 166 million yuan since it was published in 2008 by Jieli Publishing House. It also attracted 160 million views and 38,000 posts on social media.

Moreover, health books have become a huge seller, with Dr. Hong Shaoguang’s On Health series selling over one million copies.

Business textbooks are very popular among students, and there is a big market for reprint editions of popular foreign titles. The top six universities’ presses – the China Financial & Economic Publishing House, Peking University Press, Tsinghua University Press, China Renmin University Press, Dongbei University of Finance and Economics Press, and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Press – have strong market shares in this segment.

9. Writers’ Publishing House

Established in 1953, Writers’ Publishing House (Chinese: Zuo Jia Chu Ban She; pinyin: Zuojia Chbanshe) is a large-scale publishing house that publishes contemporary literature. Its most notable publication was the 2000 book Harvard Girl, which spent 16 months at number-one position on China’s bestseller list[1].

They publish a variety of commercial and literary fiction, including fantasy, science fiction, mystery, thrillers, young adult, humor, romance, and women’s fiction. They also publish a selection of nonfiction, including self-help, biographies, religion, history, and business.

Aside from their traditional publishing model, they also have a hybrid/co-publishing program for new and emerging writers. This publishing model allows authors to receive assistance and coaching in writing, promoting, and marketing their books while the publisher takes care of all aspects of the business. The company takes great pride in helping their author clients succeed and achieve their dreams. They have many testimonials from those they have helped. Their goal is to make writing a profession for every writer out there.
