The University of New Orleans Press is a student-run publishing project that publishes books and digital content. It publishes books that address issues of local and global significance.
UNO students, faculty and alumni are at the center of these projects. As a result, each book reflects the values of the University and the city of New Orleans.
About Us
The University of New Orleans, a comprehensive urban research university, is an internationally recognized institution, fostering student excellence and advancing the knowledge that fuels economic growth and social progress. The University offers baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees in academic colleges of business administration, education and human development, engineering, liberal arts, and science, as well as interdisciplinary studies. The University is a primary engine of cultural, social and intellectual development for the city, state and nation.
Established in 1958, the University of New Orleans is a public institution located on Lake Pontchartrain at Elysian Fields Avenue and on the former site of Naval Air Station New Orleans. The UNO campus is surrounded by historic landmarks and features a Homer Hitt Alumni Center built around a smoke-stack that remains from the base's military era.
About the Press
The University of New Orleans Press publishes books on a variety of subjects, including history, politics, religion, cultural studies, literature, music and art. We are dedicated to publishing works that reflect the culture, heritage and spirit of New Orleans and its surrounding region. In addition, we are committed to publishing a broad range of genres that address the critical issues that shape our society and culture. We also work to bring innovative publicity and broad distribution to the authors who write for our publications. We strive to produce works that make a difference in the lives of readers worldwide, regardless of their nationality or background. Ultimately, we hope that the stories that our authors tell will enrich our community and inspire us to learn more about the world.
Books
UNO Press publishes books about New Orleans and southeastern culture, including nonfiction and fiction. They also publish a literary journal, New Orleans Review. Founded in 1968, the journal's focus is on literature and culture in the southeastern United States.
The University of New Orleans Press is proud to support the creative community in the city of New Orleans by publishing local writers and their work. They are also a great resource for aspiring authors, offering workshops and seminars on the craft of writing, publishing, and editing.
Loujon Press, founded by Jon Edgar and Louise “Gypsy Lou” Webb in 1960, was a giant in the 1960s, publishing books by Henry Miller, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov, and Walter Lowenfels, as well as many other influential figures in the New Orleans writing scene. This book explores the rise and fall of this legendary publisher, examining its legacy through correspondence, back issues of its literary journal, contemporary reviews, and interviews.
The University of New Orleans Press also publishes the Object Lessons Series, which offers an opportunity for alumni to share their experiences in the book publishing industry. Join us for a presentation on the business of publishing by Kaitlin Ketchum ('11) and a panel discussion with Christian L. Bolden, author of Out of the Red: My Life of Gangs, Prison, and Redemption (Object Lessons Series).
Digital Content
The University of New Orleans Press offers a wide variety of digital content that is available to the public. The UNO Historical website, for example, provides free access to the documents that tell the story of the city’s past. In addition, UNO’s Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies and Earl K. Long Library Special Collections collaborate with scholars, community members and other local institutions to acquire, provide for use, preserve and publicize distinctive and unique collections that represent the history and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana.
In addition to the digital projects mentioned above, UNO is working with other digital humanities projects to increase the availability of historical data and stories in digital formats that are relevant to the city’s past and present, said project director Paul Mitchell. These efforts are being supported by a nearly $500,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant, "Illuminating the Unseen: Digital Projects to Commemorate Forgotten Voices in America's Story." This NEH support will enable UNO to continue its work to digitize its collection and develop public digital humanities programs. Specifically, the grants will allow UNO to hire new digital project managers for its digital projects and train them to keep the online sites updated and relevant. This is especially important in times of pandemic or other emergency conditions, where access to historical documents can be restricted. The work will also center audiences and communities beyond the academy, such as citizen historians, genealogists, engaged readers, teachers and students.
Press Events
The University of New Orleans Press hosts many events in which we engage with the community. These events are held in-person and virtual and may include lectures, presentations, book signings or readings, film screenings, workshops, panel discussions, and more. These events are hosted by members of the press and by faculty or staff at UNO, including professors, graduate students, alumni and friends of the press.
Our press events are also part of our efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom, community and beyond at UNO. Founded in 1958, as the first integrated public university in the South, UNO has always been committed to education access for all.
In addition to our regular press events, University of New Orleans Press hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. These events are designed to educate and entertain the public, raise funds for the University and enhance the image of the University.
