Wai-te-ata Press

Wai-te-ata Press is a digital history research centre, teaching laboratory and book arts studio at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. It is a space for exploring the myriad ways that books can be made, used and consumed in our new knowledge economy.

A walk down a steep driveway from the university's Kelburn campus leads to a basement that holds 14 historical printing presses in working order, hundreds of thousands of tiny typeface letters and a large collection of publications in several languages. This is where Dr Sydney Shep and publication assistant Ya-Wen Ho spend their days, alongside a dedicated team of volunteers.

The Press also cares for New Zealand's only Chinese-language metal type collection. The Chinese character collection was rescued from an onion-packing shed in 2007 and since then, volunteers have worked hard to restore it. They hope to someday let people use the type for printing, though they need volunteers to clean up years of dirt and dust that has built up in crevices.

As the name suggests, Wai-te-ata Press aims to build communities through creative print projects and intercultural collaboration. They have an interdisciplinary approach to their work, and their aim is to increase access to people from all linguistic backgrounds through creating new type collections that include unique language features such as the macronised vowels in te reo Maori.

For example, they are currently looking for volunteers who can help them translate a stanza of 'Wellington Bamboo Branch Songs' into Chinese using their Heritage Type Collection (using the original metal type). This is an exciting project that will enable a bilingual edition of the text to be published.

Another ongoing project is to create a new translation application that allows anyone in the community to access and print from the Heritage Type Collection at Wai-te-ata Press. This will allow a wider range of people from the Wellington region to have a go at translating their own poems and will help them improve their language skills.

In addition to the above projects, Wai-te-ata also aims to foster cross-cultural and technological convergences through creative research commissions. They will offer two new annually-recurring residencies in 2019, one for someone to explore crossovers between technology and the arts, and the other for a person who is interested in exploring projects that enhance understandings of and engagement with Chinese Aotearoa.

THWUP

Founded in the 1970s, Victoria University Press (now THWUP) is one of New Zealand’s premier scholarly publishers specialising in history and public affairs. It also publishes a wide range of books of literary interest. Its highlights include the award-winning The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton, Elizabeth Knox’s The Absolute Book, Hera Lindsay Bird’s bestselling debut Hera Lindsay Bird, and a selection of poetry collections.

THWUP is the publishing arm of Victoria University, located in Wellington, New Zealand. It is a significant player in the local and international book trade, and is known for its high-quality printing, marketing, and distribution services. Its list includes some of the country’s finest scholarly and literary works, and the Press is also an important provider of books for the classroom, especially in New Zealand.

The THWUP library houses over 400 titles, including an impressive number of books on New Zealand history and politics, with a particular emphasis on social history. The press also publishes a plethora of books on the arts and literature, including a range of fiction and poetry titles from established and emerging writers, as well as some of the country’s best young literary stars.

THWUP also boasts a number of books about the science of writing, including The Art of the Proposal, an anthology which celebrates the best and worst of New Zealand literary proposals. Offset Journal

The Offset Journal, produced annually by Victoria University's Professional Writing, Communication and Multimedia program, is a unique and intriguing publication. It is a collection of poetry, prose, music, multimedia and printed images that combine to create an intriguing textual experience.

Using an indirect reading of human feeling, the work explores a wide range of themes and emotions. From the acute anxiety of Lunabella Mrozik Gawler's 'Turn On, Log In, Drop Out' to the wry and ironic despair of Teri Louise Kelly's 'The Cracks', each piece of the journal is expertly written and accompanied by a visual element that complements the text in an intriguing way.

Some of the works are more accomplished than others, but all of them offer a fascinating and sometimes surprising obscurity, which adds to their depth and complexity. It is this variety of media, and the intertwining of them that makes the Offset Journal a rewarding reading experience.

To set up default offset accounts for a journal, select Options > Offset Account and choose the option that best suits your needs. You can choose to set up a fixed offset account that cannot be changed, or you can specify that the offset account in a journal name overrides the offset account that is assigned as the default for a vendor or vendor group.

You can also use the Offset Account Format field to choose whether an offsetting entry is debit- or credit-oriented. This can be useful if you're reclassifying expenditure, revenue or balance sheet accounts.

For more information, see the Offset Account Setup topic in this user guide. You can open the Offset Account Setup page from the Default account setup page, or from the All vendors list page.

When you assign a vendor or vendor group as a default offset account, that offset account becomes the Offset Account on each vendor invoice journal. The offset account is used to deduct and credit the offsetting cost and expense in the resulting journal entry. It's important to set up a default offset account for each vendor if you typically pay for the same types of things from the same vendors over time.
