Zachary Whalen - Intern

A Little Bit About Me

My name is Zachary Whalen, and I’m a sophomore at the University of Southern California. I have been writing ever since I can remember, but it wasn’t until I got to college and started really studying literature that I found a deep passion for the craft of writing and editing.

I loved dissecting literature, and even more so I loved writing creative pieces inspired by this literature that pushed me to my creative limits and dared me to really explore the books we were reading. Fantasy has always been a favorite genre of mine, but I’ve found a deep love for science fiction and memoir at college as well, and they are two genres I would love to work with and publish once I enter the industry.

I decided to pursue an internship with Alpha Book Publisher because I wanted to have some internship experience before I started applying for summer internships, and Alpha Book Publisher caught my attention specifically because it seemed like interns got a lot more hands-on opportunities and experience than a lot of the other internships I looked at. From this internship, I hope to gain a better understanding of how the publishing industry works, and what goes into writing and releasing a book.

My long term goals in the publishing field are to make publishing my full time job while I write, ideally at a smaller indie press that focuses on releasing books that may be dismissed by the larger publishing houses, either because they were written by marginalized authors or because they deal with controversial subject matter. I would love to make a significant impact on the industry by giving these books the love and promotion they deserve, and introducing them to readers who will truly appreciate them.
